PLOT SUMMARY:

Set in the early 1920s -- during the days of flappers, speak-easy joints, and Prohibition -- Thoroughly Modern Millie is the comedic tale of a young woman who moves from a small country town to New York City. Believing herself to be thoroughly modern, she decides that instead of marrying for love she's going to marry for money. Her plan starts off well enough; she is hired by an attractive albeit egotistical employer named Trevor Graydon... her first marriage prospect! However, surprise romance and thrills come into her life when she meets a devil-may-care playboy named Jimmy.

But wait -- there's more! Millie and her newfound friend Miss Dorothy are staying at a cheap hotel run by a woman named Mrs. Meers. On the surface, she appears to be a kindly (yet strange) hotel manager from China. But underneath her Asian costume lurks a jilted New York actress who has turned to a life of crime. She and her henchmen have been kidnapping young women who arrive at the hotel and are all alone in this world. What happens to 'em? They are shipped to Hong Kong and sold into White Slavery! In keeping with the lighthearted spirit of this show, the sub-plot gives us a touch of black comedy and is meant to be almost melodramatic -- as our heroine Millie and her cohorts come to the rescue of all these young girls... even Miss Dorothy! Thoroughly Modern Millie is a fun-filled musical with lots of twists, turns, songs and dances that reflect the period of the Roaring '20s.
