Breakdown

Lillian Hellman’s suspenseful masterpiece Watch on the Rhine places us in the Farrelly home outside Washington D.C., just as America is on the brink of entering World War II. Fanny’s daughter escapes to the D.C. suburbs with her German husband, a man deeply involved in anti-fascist movements. But an Eastern European guest with ulterior motives is also living in their midst and tensions rise as it becomes clear that no one’s safety can be guaranteed—at home or abroad.

CAST: [FANNY FARRELLY] - Marsha Mason

SEEKING:

KURT MULLER
Caucasian Male, mid-late 40s. German; married to Sara. An intense, virile man of quiet strength and intelligence. He is kind, gentle and dutiful, but also a powerful, intimidating force. He is reticent, slow and deliberate in his movements, as he was badly injured on a mission and still suffers pain. He is patient and kind with the Farrellys, but he is out of place in this opulent world. He loves his family deeply, but his primary mission in life is the anti-fascist cause. Speaks with a light German accent.

TECK DE BRANCOVIS
Caucasian Male, mid-40s, Good looking, with an air of sophistication and European elegance. An impoverished Romanian count of good manners and odious character. Frightening, deceptive and ruthless in his pursuit of survival. Married to Marthe, they have been staying at the Farrelly house in D.C. long past their welcome. Speaks with a light Eastern European accent.

MARTHE DE BRANCOVIS
Female, early 30s. A fragile, elegant beauty. Vulnerable, with a quiet resolve. An American with a European air, she is originally from the D.C. area, but is married to Teck and has been in Europe for a long time. There is no love between them. In fact, she fears him and wishes to return to a simpler life of safety and security. Now a house guest in the Farrelly home, she is in love with David.
