Theatre states, “Target Margin’s Uncle Vanya will combine fearless experimentation with fundamental craft. We at TMT have a special relationship to the plays of Anton Chekhov. He is an emblem of naturalism, what has become the mainstream idea of acting and theatrical representation: psychology, behavior, the 4th-wall view into a recognizable world. It’s impossible to work on Chekhov without acknowledging this. But of course today we all know that Chekhov is much more than that. His plays are a tonal challenge, veering between comedy and pathos; they shimmer with a quiet poetry and strange symbolism. This is the Chekhov we celebrate.”
