SWEENEY TODD
(35-50 years old): Formerly known as Benjamin Barker the barber, Sweeney Todd has returned to London under an assumed name to seek vengeance on those who wronged him. Namely, he is looking to kill Judge Turpin and his Beadle, the two men raped his wife and sent him to jail 15 years ago for a crime he didn't commit. He has had his life torn apart and his thirst for blood cannot be quenched. He is not entirely humorless however, and he is able to find joy in his dogged pursuit, the dreams of which kept him alive while imprisoned. While he's been in prison, he lived pretty hard, and his physical self reflects that. Vocal Range: low F to high G. Actors of all ethnicities strongly encouraged to submit.
MRS LOVETT
(35-50 years old): Sweeney's only friend in the world. Mrs. Lovett, a widow, runs a pie shop that admittedly sells some of the worst pies in London. A bit off her rocker and totally in love with Sweeney, Mrs. Lovett hatches the diabolical plan to use human meat in her pies. While not particularly maternal, she is fiercely protective of Toby, a teenage boy who she employs in her pie shop after Sweeney murders his former employer. Lovett is zany, a dreamer, and while probably certifiably insane, she still manages to be a pragmatist. Provides much comic relief for Sweeney and the audience. Vocal Range: low G to high F. Actors of all ethnicities strongly encouraged to submit.
PIRELLI
(20's-30's): A bombastic con man and snake oil salesman who sells his Miracle Anti-Balding Elixir to the unsuspecting fools of London. While actually an Irish peasant named Danny O'Higgins who worked in Benjamin Barker's barber shop as a teenager, he now plays the part of a foppish Italian fancy man named Adolfo Pirelli. He's a showman, always on the lookout for a way to make a quick buck. The actor playing Pirelli must be comfortable with an over-the-top Italian accent, a low class Irish brogue, and be able to sing in an operatic tenor style. Vocal Range: low C to (sustained) high C. Actors of all ethnicities strongly encouraged to submit.
BEADLE
(30-40 years old): The ultimate toady or stooge, the Beadle works in Judge Turpin's employ, carrying out his dirty work. A clownish thug and probably not very bright, the Beadle wields his power as a way to impress the Judge. Dreams of ascending the ranks to a higher position but lacks the necessary education or social finesse to be anything other than Turpin's henchman. Secretly loves to play the harmonium and sing old timey songs. Vocal Range: low Bb to (sustained) high B natural. Actors of all ethnicities strongly encouraged to submit.
