Breakdown

**UPDATED 2/10/15**

The play takes place in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1973.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

IRENE
Late 50’s, but you wouldn’t know it. The producer, director and star of the Prometheus Theater, a community theater in Reading, PA in the early 1970’s. A force of nature with an outsize personality, Irene has willed the Prometheus into existence and willed it to survive. Theatrical, ambitious, indomitable and given to the grand gesture, she is wildly unrealistic and deeply pragmatic (often in the same breath). Her speech is peppered with yiddishisms and references to the current NY theater scene, downtown and up, and it’s impossible to know which portions of her biography are factual and which are….not so factual at all. This role is CAST.

CAR
30’s. A playwright, looking back on a time of his life when he discovered the theater and his sexuality. For much of the play, he plays his teenaged self, a young man in search of his place in the world, which he discovers in the theater. Witty, smart as a whip, a bit cynical as an adult and the narrator of the play, he’s able to look back on his younger, more innocent self - - inventive, clever, inexperienced, and a bit of a misfit in search of a home, which he eventually finds in this community of fellow misfits. This role is CAST.

SID
Late 50’s. She is the co-producer and co-founder of the Prometheus with Irene. Sid shoulders the hard work, the unglamorous work of running a theater. She is stage manager, production manage, house manager, box office manager, the list is endless. Tough, unsentimental, constantly frustrated by Irene’s unrealistic demands. She and Irene have been working together for a long time and Sid has begun to lose patience. This role is CAST.

CLIVE
40’s. African-American. An actor with the company, he has stature, style and wit. Gay, self-assured, clever, he shares with Irene an innate sophistication about the theater and a sense of authority. He might not easily admit it, but without the theater, he’d be lost.

DAMIAN
20’s. A local guy, working as a waiter and more recently as an actor with the Prometheus company. Very attractive, easy going, charming, the kind of guy who everyone falls for, women and men alike. He’s got an easy sexiness and openness. A good guy.

MARIA
30’s. The company’s ingénue, even if she is outgrowing some of the roles. She has traditionally played the young leading ladies and views the world with a certain naiveté and open heart. The Prometheus is the focus of her life and she’s often teased by the other company members, who are a bit more sophisticated than she.
