Breakdown

Ingmar Bergman's Nora, a brilliant distillation of Ibsen's masterpiece, A Doll's House, is a riveting tale of a seemingly conventional woman, struggling and then coming to terms with her life as a doll-wife in a traditional marriage. Out of the shadows of deceit, blackmail, and betrayal, Nora rises to a new consciousness of herself as a woman in a man's world. Through the microcosm of Nora's doll house marriage, both Bergman and Ibsen pose crucial questions about the role of gender in modern society.

FOR FUTURE UNDERSTUDIES/REPLACEMENTS ONLY:

NORA HELMER: 30’s. Female. Lovely, charming, and appealing, and keenly aware of the effect her charm and appeal have on others. A doting wife and mother and the perfect hostess, she knows it is her duty to keep everything in her household looking perfect. But this perfect façade masks a shrewd and perceptive spirit. Devoted to her husband, and is willing to use every tool in her arsenal to protect him. [CAST].

TORVALD HELMER: 30’s – 40’s. Male. Nora’s husband. Proud, responsible, painstakingly meticulous. Hard working. A respected businessman, who has just received a prestigious promotion. Takes pride in his ability to provide for and protect his family and in his sterling reputation. Has a strong and absolute view of morality and right and wrong, and never forgets a transgression. [CAST].

NILS KROGSTAD: 30’s – 40’s. Male. A disgraced colleague of Torvald’s. Desperation and shame have driven him to resort to drastic measures to preserve his name and to protect his family from dishonor. Circumstances have caused him to behave reprehensibly, but he himself is not reprehensible. Deeply sensitive, capable of great love and compassion, but those are all luxuries that his situation can no longer afford. [CAST]

CHRISTINE LINDE: 30’s – 40’s. Female. A former schoolmate of Nora’s. Sensible and pragmatic. A realist. She knows what she needs to do to survive, and isn’t afraid to make enormous sacrifices in order to endure. Hardworking and practical, she is self-sufficient by necessity, but in her deepest heart, she still holds on to a romantic hope for more. [CAST]

DR. RANK: 60’s. Male. Torvald and Nora’s ailing friend. Enchanted by and in love with Nora. Playful and roguish in spirit, despite his illness. Clever and insightful, he is able to see beyond the elaborate facades the others hide behind. [CAST].
