BREAKDOWN

DR. MICHAELS
40s to 60s – A therapist who runs a mental health center. Overworked and stressed, but dogged and determined. A gentle, serious man, haunted by his mother’s suicide. [ROLE CAST]

JEROME
30s to 40s – A patient obsessed with boxes and moving into a new room, but unable to move. Vulnerable, sweet and open, but in a unintentionally passive aggressive loop with his mother. Any race or ethnicity.

MOM
30s to 50s – Exists largely Dr. Michael’s imagination, but has a detailed reality and sometimes interacts with others. Relentless and critical, while ironic, she seeks out people’s weak spots. White.

JANE
40s to 60s – A patient. A divorced mother whose son Jimmy recently committed suicide. Suffering from headaches and guilt. Working class. Any race or ethnicity.

JIMMY
late 20s to 30s – Jane's son. In and out of trouble, he is unaware of his own depression and generally adrift. Working class. Any race or ethnicity.

MRS. GARLAND
late 40s to 60s – Jerome's mother. Emotional and unable to restrain speaking her feelings. Both maddened by and critical of her son, she wreaks havoc on them both. Any race or ethnicity.

EVANGELINE
late 40s to 60s – A therapist at the health center. Experienced and savvy, with a no-nonsense but thoughtful air, she can be direct and in control when needed. Has her own drinking problem. [ROLE CAST]

TIMOTHY
40s to 60s – A patient with mild autism. Eager to learn to relate to people and expand his life, even get a girlfriend, but his intensity and lack of social awareness get him in trouble. Any race or ethnicity.

FRANNIE
12 – A patient living in foster care who is up for adoption. Uses her sharp intelligence and wit to be extremely challenging and demanding. Hyper and manic, she is ablaze with panic-driven energy. Any race or ethnicity.

NORA
30s to 60s – A foster mom hoping to adopt Frannie. While overwhelmed by Frannie’s energy and chaos, she is determined to push forward. Blunt and demanding, but cares deeply. Any race or ethnicity.

DENISE
30s to 50s – A secretary at the health center. Very capable, efficient and clear, aware of the obstacles but not beaten down by them. Any race or ethnicity.

BARNARD
70 – A new patient, married to Teresa. Having lost his will to act, he has taken to bed. A thinker, he suffers from an existential despair. Highly educated, upper middle class. Any race or ethnicity.

TERESA
60s to 70s – Married to Barnard and upset with his condition, she tries to push him into therapy. Upper middle class. Any race or ethnicity.

MARCY
30s to 60s– An insurance company case manager. Cheery and professional, she is unflappable and deadly in her precision.

ALEX
30s to 40s – A new patient. He is gay but has never had a relationship, out of shyness and fear. Fixated on a man he doesn’t know, he’s deeply needy and all atwitter
