Breakdown

Theater’s statement: “We are especially committed to an ethnically diverse cast, and we are particularly interested in older and younger African-American, Asian, and multi-ethnic actors. Experience with classical drama is essential. We are an experimental theater company and actors must be comfortable with unorthodox approaches and unusual treatment of text. We seek actors who are comfortable trying things without knowing why.”

The 2015 / 2016 season launches our Eugene O’Neill program, featuring work based on MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA, O’Neill’s great trilogy, as the spine of our work. MOURNING is unusually large, comprising three complete plays and many hours on stage, so we plan to phase it in to create ample time for artistic development. In February 2016, in the Abrons Arts Center’s historic Playhouse, we will present DRUNKEN WITH WHAT? based on the first part of the trilogy, HOMECOMING. In this initial production, the first in our multi-year exploration of MOURNING, Director David Herskovits will test a variety of ways of breaking up the text and staging, designers will test ideas about the physical shape of the production, and performers will test different stylistic approaches to the material.

We are seeking ensemble members (men and women) employed on a principal contract. Roles may be overlapped or shared.

Characters include:

Brigadier General Ezra Mannon
Christine Mannon, his wife
Lavinia Mannon, their daughter
Orin Mannon, their son
First Lieutenant of Infantry
Captain Adam Brant
Captain Peter Niles
Hazel Niles, Peter’s sister
Seth Beckwith, the old gardener

Additionally there is a ''chorus'' of townsfolk.
