Nora
(Female, 45-60, Any Ethnicity) Independent, fiercely intelligent, and with a wicked sense of humor, the Nora of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House returns to her family as a successful author and free woman who has lived a tough but fulfilling life of adventure and found her voice. Witty and with an outsized personality, self-protective and at times selfish. Seeking an actor with brilliant comedic instincts.
Torvald
(Male, 50-65, Any Ethnicity) Nora’s estranged husband. Torvald’s mild-mannered exterior belies his wounded pride and inner anger at having been abandoned by his wife and left to rear their children. Highly conscious of his place in society and wants to be a savior but also knows how to play the victim. Can be both sensitive and big hearted and cold and stubborn.
Anne Marie
(Female, 60s-70s, Any Ethnicity) The Helmer’s blunt, big-hearted, and nosy nanny. Deeply entwined in the family’s dramatic history, Anne Marie has had to sacrifice rearing her own child in order to care for The Helmer’s children. Aware of her position as a servant but still unafraid to speak the truth. Despite being deeply intertwined in the Helmer family’s personal drama, she has retained a brash sense of humor.
Emmy
(Female, 18-25, Any Ethnicity) Nora and Torvald’s daughter, who has been reared without her mother. Clever, confident, and quick witted, she is in many ways wise beyond her years, and yet with an assuredness that often reveals her naïveté.

St. Germain - SPT
Mary Mallon
(Female, 50-65, White ) A tough, god-fearing Irish immigrant. Loves her work as a home cook and determined to retain her independence. At first refuses to believe she is a carrier for typhoid and once she does accept it, chooses to believe that her condition is god’s way. Vilified by society. Often combative and brittle but with a sensitive and loving side as well, her inner life and motivations mystify those around her.
Dr. Ann Saltzer
(Female, 20s-30s, Any Ethnicity) Research bacteriologist at Riverside Hospital. Pragmatic, serious about science and medicine, and driven by a passion to find the answer to Mary’s condition, she can also be spiteful and full of anger towards Mary due to her frustration at Mary’s inability to accept responsibility and learn the tools that would keep her from being a typhoid carrier.
Dr. William Mills
(Male, 40s-50s, Any Ethnicity) Administrator at Riverside Hospital. Dr. Mills is frustrated at having Mary as his charge but is less flustered by her than Dr. Saltzer is. Nevertheless, Mary has still entered his psyche. Can be both understanding and a bit smug.
Father Michael McKuen / Martin Frazier
(Male, 20s-30s, Any Ethnicity) A young and optimistic new member of the clergy who thinks he can make a difference in Mary’s life. However, his insecurities as a priest are exposed when Mary wholeheartedly resists his attempts to reach her through religion. A genuinely kind and empathetic person.
Sarah
(Female, Age 8) A former charge of Mary’s who becomes sick with typhoid. Sees Mary as a maternal figure and the two have a loving bond. ROLE CAST.

Della
(Female, 45-60, White ) Sweet, southern, and traditional, Della is a passionate baker who has always played by the rules. In love with her husband but has gone a long time without feeling sexually desired. ROLE CAST.
Tim
(Male, 45-60, White) Della’s husband and a good ol’ boy. A plumber, Tim lives a comfortable working class conservative existence and has never been challenged on his traditional values. Loving and gentle but not very in touch with his emotions. Expects traditional gender roles in his home.
Jen
(Female, Early 30s, White) Sensitive,bubbly, and head over heels in love with Macy, though at times not quite comfortable with her own sexuality. Raised in the world of Della and Tim, her small town roots are often at odds with the liberal New York life she has chosen as an adult. Has always dreamed of a big beautiful wedding. Grieving the loss of her mother and fighting through the pain with a peppy attitude. Afraid of the big love she feels.
Macy
(Female, Early 30s, Any Ethnicity: Black/Latinx/Asian American) Outspoken, intelligent, and progressive, Macy is unafraid to speak the truth and share both her personal and political opinions, even if it means eschewing tact and politeness with her fiancé’s extended family. She has a deep love for Jen and a need to understand fully why people act the way they do.

Afong Moy
(Female, 20-50 years old, Asian American) Chinese woman with bound feet, who journeys from early teens to old age. Earnest and optimistic, then passionate and defiant. Based on the historical Afong Moy, the first Chinese woman in America. Ranges from exuberant whimsy to mature, poetic self-reflection. Asian American actors of all ages and abilities are strongly encouraged to apply, particularly actors with a mobility disability.
Atung
(Male, 30s-50s, Asian American) Translator and companion to Afong Moy. A Chinese American man who journeys from adulthood to old age. Sometimes grumpy, sometimes lyrical. Dry sense of humor.

Cass
(Female, Late 20s-Early 30s, Black) A professor who is the victim of a hate crime in her liberal university town. Serious, intelligent, and passionate about her job. Cass is often guarded and protective of herself after years of putting up with both overt and casual racism and has been so worn down by her reality that she wants to focus on personal goals rather than fight the system.
Viv
(Female, Late 20s-Early 30s, White) Cass’s former girlfriend and now her roommate, Viv is a loving and nurturing social activist who often is too busy being helpful to listen to those that need her help. Genuinely loves Cass and wants the best for her.
Parker
(Trans Male, Late 20s-Early 30s, Latinx) Cass’s current boyfriend and another professor at the University. Can sometimes be aloof but loves Cass. Also often asked to speak for every member in his community as the lone trans latinx member of the faculty, Parker shares Cass’s sense of isolation and has similarly developed a thick skin and sense of humor in the face of adversity. Only trans (FTM) actors will be seen for this role.
Dean West
(Female, 50s, White) Very aware of the optics of her position as the dean, she wants to make sure that she is seen as presenting an open, inclusive, diverse, environment but is not willing to put in the work herself to create that environment, but rather expects the more diverse members of her faculty to do this work for her. Can be pushy and knows how to wield her power as the Dean when necessary.
Mara
(Female, Early twenties, White) An over-eager, impatient, student whose often misguided attempts to understand marginalized communities leads her to making cringe-worthy mistakes, like wearing a hijab in solidarity with muslim students. Think Election’s Tracy Flick but as a social justice warrior. She wants to make her voice heard during diversity day, even if it means drowning out the voices of those she wants to help.

Amanda Wingfield
(Female, 50s-60s) A faded Southern belle from a prominent family who received a traditional upbringing, she has suffered a reversal of fortune and social standing. Extroverted and theatrical, she often withdraws from reality into fantasy in difficult circumstances. She can be both giddy and girlish and domineering and cruel, refusing to live in the reality of her circumstances. The matriarch of the family, she has a fraught relationship with both of her children and while she wants what is best for both Tom and Laura, she has in many ways alienated them both.
Tom Wingfield
(Male, 25-45) Moody, conflicted and full of contradictions. A lover of literature and poetry who dreams of adventure and escape. However, he is inextricably bound to the Wingfield household. Feels deeply protective of his sister and has a complicated relationship with his mother. ROLE CAST.
Laura Wingfield
(Female, 23) Delicate and compassionate, but emotionally and physically stunted. Laura’s physical impairment, her limp, has become a defining feature of personality. Her self consciousness about the way she is viewed in the world has led her to have a more elaborate private fantasy life, caring for her collection of glass animals rather than interacting with other human beings. Fragile and desperately shy but beautifully innocent, Laura stands in sharp contrast to the selfishness displayed by the other members of her family and is also deeply affected by her relationship with her mother.
Jim O’Connor
(Male, 24 ) A gentleman caller. A kind and ordinary young man, there is a wholesomeness and an innocence to Jim that helps him connect with Laura’s gentle nature. An outstanding success in high school, but life since graduation has been tougher than he expected and he is not quite the golden boy he once was. Still, he is cheerful and optimistic and does his best to draw Laura out of her shell, paying her the type of gentle attention that she rarely receives.
