Jamie Leonhart: ESTUARY, AN ARTIST/MOTHER STORY

Wednesday, November 16 at 7:00PM

$15

Jamie Leonhart's Estuary: an artist/mother story is a musical exploration of the challenges and unanticipated realities of being an artist and a new parent, made in collaboration with critically acclaimed director Joanna Settle. The nascence of the piece began soon after Leonhart's son was born. The singer navigates the changes in her artistic work, her relationship with her husband and the new world of everything "baby" with equal parts humor and heartache. Leonhart is unflinching in her candor as she sings about the conflict, loneliness and anger that accompany the mother/artist collision. The show features original music by Leonhart and musical director Michael Leonhart, performed by an all-female band including Pauline Kim, Eleonore Oppenheim and Sara Budde. Estuary was created as a part of New York Voices, the Joe's Pub series commissioning and presenting new theatrical works from critically-acclaimed musicians. The program is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

GAUCHO

Wednesday, November 16 at 9:30PM

$20

Gaucho combines the influence of gypsy jazz of 1930's Europe with the rhythmic drive and collective improvisation of New Orleans swing music, gutbucket blues and elements of ragtime. Their sound, a uniquely American concoction, blends instrumental acuity and lighthearted humor that keep their audience coming back for more. As founder, guitarist, and main composer Dave Ricketts says, the band is "in love with the music of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and Jimmie Rodgers, as well as the stories, the life styles and the footsteps of hundreds of other great jazz, blues, country and rock musicians that created the sound of American Music from roughly 1900-1950's."

ETHEL & ROBERT MIRABAL: THE RIVER

Thursday, November 17 at 7:00PM

$20

The River continues ETHEL's deeply successful nine-year collaboration with Native American musician, instrument builder and three-time GRAMMY Award-winner Robert Mirabal. The live performance immerses the audience in a flow of music, narrative, and ritual, created by ETHEL and Mirabal exclusively for this program, evoking timeless Native American traditions through contemporary artistry.

Come see why The New York Times calls Employee of the Month "beloved" and Blackbook calls it comedian Catie Lazarus's "hilarious podcast talk show" and The New Yorker calls, "her line of inquiry is decidedly unorthodox." Her guests this month are actor John Turturro, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and more to be announced. The show also features comedy and music from house band, which features Freestyle Love Supreme's beatboxer Shockwave and MC Andrew Bancroft, JarEd Dixon (In the Heights) and Antibalas's Eric Biondo and Rob Jost, plus live illustrations from Michael Arthur and EOTM's magical Award Ceremony.

Morgan James

Friday, November 18 at 7:30PM

$25

One voice is all it takes. The right one can make you fall in love at first listen, elicit tears or bring you back to a different era altogether. A microphone and a stage remain the only necessities. That holds true for New York-based soul singer, songwriter and Broadway chanteuse Morgan James. On Hunter, her full-length debut for Epic Records, she casts an unbreakable spell with a powerhouse voice, theatrical swing and a soulful poise. James assumed co-writing duties on eight of the album's 11 tracks and even performed all of her own background vocals and harmonies - no tuning on any of it. Since Hunter's release, her music videos have accumulated more than 45 million (and climbing) views. With viral sensation Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox, James has toured the world, and is currently touring with her band while writing her next album.

Roze's project combines funk, fusion, Afro-beat, soul, jazz stylings, live dance and heavy percussion. Roze is also well known for her work musically arranging bands for artists, such as Jack Nkanga from Angola.

ROB TOWNSEND

Friday, November 18 at Midnight

$12

Rob Townsend writes songs, sings them, and plays guitar and piano too. You might call him a singer-songwriter, but he wouldn't because that word bums him out. VICE said ""When a large chunk of today's charts are made up of joyless minimal covers of former dancefloor bangers, it can sometimes feel like pop music has lost its vibrancy. But then something comes around, like a ray of sunshine through a dense canopy of trash, to remind you that music is actually alright."

Heather Christian & THE SECOND ANNUAL ARBONAUTS BIRTHDAY CONCERT

Saturday, November 19 at 7:00PM

$20

Obie Award-winning composer Heather Christian (The World is Round, Mission Drift) is the daughter of a go-go dancer and a blues musician. A disgruntled classical pianist, she and her "orchestra", The Arbornauts (an eclectic assortment of multi-hyphenate musicians) turn Christian's dream-like hymns into a chamber punk collection of stories and meditations.

MICHAEL R. Jackson, PRESENTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE MUSCAL THEATRE FACTORY
Monday, November 21 at 7:00PM

$20 - 30

Michael R. Jackson is a composer, lyricist, and trash talker. He's not only unapologetically black and gay, he's relentlessly so. Haters have called him "old," "a misogynist," and a "self-loathing coon." Lovers have called him a "cut-up," a "gadfly," and a "National Treasure." His music is a soulful musical theater singer-songwriter sound wed to lyrics that are personal, humorous, and boundary-pushing. He wrote book and lyrics with composer and co-book writer Anna Jacobs for the musical Teeth, based on the Mitchell Lichtenstein 2007 film of the same name and presented by Musical Theatre Factory, and book, music, and lyrics for the musical A Strange Loop, also presented by Musical Theatre Factory.

Tuesday, November 22 at 7:00PM

Before the art of song was divided into narrow stylistic slices, before there was jazz or pop or rock, there was nightclub singing. Like Sammy Davis, Jr, Ethel Water and Mel Tormé before him, Julian Fleisher mixes masterful interpretations of a wide range of popular songs with kick-ass showmanship and a generously endowed band that, as the Washington Post put it, "blew the roof off of Joe's Pub." Measure of Success is a new musical with music and lyrics by Fleisher and book by Kirsten Guenther.

ALY TADROS W/ OPENER DUSTIN GLEDHILL & LUCAS PULLIN

Wednesday, November 23 at 9:30PM

$15

When Aly Tadros was offered her first paid gig, she had three original songs under her belt. The set time called for two hours. She took it anyways. Six years and over 700 shows later, that gutsy attitude has defined Tadros as an ardent and auspicious voice among young singer/songwriters. Spacious and melodic, salty and moving, her classical guitar writhes in a fusion of Latin, Middle Eastern, and American folk and pop. Take the cool intimacy of Norah Jones, the guttural growl of Fiona Apple, and unorthodox guitar work of Ani Difranco and you've got Aly Tadros.

COMPANY FREAK

Saturday, November 26 at 7:00PM

$20

Company Freak is a feeling. It's a recombinant, shifting enterprise: a revolving cast of legendary vocalists and session players from classic disco and funk bands of the 1970s meeting a handpicked and curated assortment of some of the best singers and musicians lighting up dance music. The mastermind of all of it is fashion-forward musician-DJ-songwriter-record producerJason King. Company Freak's fabulousness is a deliberate throwback to orchestral disco, funk, soul and house- that moment when nightclubs like the Paradise Garage and Studio 54 ruled the New York nightlife and bands like Change, Shalamar, Boney M, Midnight Star, Kid Creole and the Coconuts made waves on the charts. Company Freak's opulent dancefloor sound is unquestionably retro and groovy, but it's state-of-the-art and techno-sleek, too. Mixed by DFA Records legend Eric Broucek (Hercules and Love Affair, LCD Soundsystem, Holy Ghost).

Joe's Pub presents the best in live music and performance nightly, continuing its commitment to diversity, production values, community and artistic freedom. The organization also offers unique opportunities like New York Voices, an artist commissioning program that provides musicians the resources and tools needed to develop original theater works. Commissioned artists have included Ethan Lipton, Toshi Reagon, Bridget Everett, Allen Toussaint and more. In 2011, the Pubreceived a top-to-bottom renovation, leading to improved sightlines, expanded seating capacity and a new menu from acclaimed Chef Andrew Carmellini. With its intimate atmosphere and superior acoustics, Joe's Pub presents talent from all over the world as part of The Public's programming downtown at its Astor Place home, hosting approximately 800 shows and serving over 100,000 audience members annually.

The Public Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, is the only theater in New York that produces Shakespeare, the classics, musicals, contemporary, and experimental pieces in equal measure. Eustis has created new community-based initiatives designed to engage audiences like Public Lab, Public Studio, Public Forum, Public Works, and a remount of the Mobile Unit. The Public continues the work of its visionary founder, Joe Papp, by acting as an advocate for the theater as an essential cultural force, and leading and framing dialogue on some of the most important issues of our day. Creating theater for one of the largest and most diverse audience bases in New York City for over 60 years, today the Company engages audiences in a variety of venues-including its landmark downtown home at Astor Place, which houses five theaters and Joe's Pub; the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, home to free Shakespeare in the Park; and the Mobile Unit, which tours productions to underserved audiences throughout New York City's five boroughs. The Public's wide range of programming includes free Shakespeare in the Park, the bedrock of the Company's dedication to making theater accessible to all; Public Works, an expanding initiative that is designed to cultivate new connections and new models of engagement with artists, audiences and the community each year; and audience and artist development initiatives that range from Emerging Writers Group and to the Public Forum series. The Public is located on property owned by the City of New York and receives annual support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; and in October 2012 the landmark building downtown at Astor Place was revitalized to physically manifest the Company's core mission of sparking new dialogues and increasing accessibility for artists and audiences, by dramatically opening up the building to the street and community, and transforming the lobby into a public piazza for artists, students, and audiences. The Public is currently represented on Broadway by the Tony Award-winning acclaimed American musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Public has received 59 Tony Awards, 168 Obie Awards, 53 Drama Desk Awards, 54 Lortel Awards, 32 Outer Critics Circle Awards, 13 New York Drama Critics Awards, and five Pulitzer Prizes.
