The Children's Crusade: kids walk out of their jobs or schools to take to the streets and stand up for what they believe in, for a fairer and safer world. Does this describe recent current events, a historical event, or the plot of a Disney musical? Trick question - the answer is all of the above! At the same time that the children of Stoneman Douglas High School, the site of latest tragic school shooting, are leading children across the country in making their voices heard, Chanhassen Dinner Theatres is presenting the regional premiere of NEWSIES, a new musical adaptation of the 1992 Disney movie based on the historical newsboy strike of 1899. As is happening today in real life, the kids involved the historical strike and the characters in the musical demand that the people in power listen to them in their call for justice. But the latter group does it with music and fabulous dancing. Children truly are our hope for the future, and NEWSIES celebrates that idea while providing a fun, entertaining, and inspirational show.

Regional audiences can prepare to seize the day with Aurora Theatre's 2018-2019 Peach State Federal Credit Union Signature Series, announced today. The second largest professional theater in Georgia will once again bring premiere performances, heartfelt dramas and Broadway-caliber productions with extraordinary talent to the heart of downtown Lawrenceville. This season's diverse line-up features Disney's NEWSIES, BE HERE NOW, A DOLL'S HOUSE, PART 2, the world-premiere musical MEN WITH MONEY, NATIVE GARDENS and the highly anticipated return of the celebrated holiday classic CHRISTMAS CANTEEN 2018, back by popular demand for a 23rd year. The upcoming season is led by co-founders Anthony Rodriguez and Ann-Carol Pence and features a tremendous assortment of dramas, comedies and musicals that will have audiences of all ages ready to seize a season subscription!

Committed, presented by The New York Theater's Winterfest, will premiere at The Hudson Guild Theater (441 West 26th Street) on Tuesday, February 6th at 6.15pm, with additional performances on Saturday, February 10th at 8.30pm and Sunday, February 11th at 1.00pm.  Written by award winning director, Tricia Brouk (Romance and Cigarettes, "Sublets," This Dinner is Full), Committed features 11 original songs by lyricist/composer, Andrew David Sotomayor, (The Curvy Widow, Newsies).

On a bitter cold blizzard day in January, the Maine theatre community was deriving some warmth and cheer by celebrating its achievements with the 2017 Broadway World Audience Choice award winners. The sixteen theatre artists voted by Maine theatre-goers as the best in each category of performing and technical achievements were selected from a group of 69 finalists, culled from over 9000 nominees rwho epresented less than % of all those in contention for the accolades, and voting for the winners was close and competitive to the very end of the process.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts and Mark Cortale announce the return of the Broadway Concert Series hosted by Seth Rudetsky to Parker Playhouse. The afternoon host on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio's On Broadway channel will deliver three intimate evenings of incredible music and hilarious conversation with Jeremy Jordan, Tony Award nominated star of Newsies and NBC's Smash and CW's Supergirl (Today, January 6), Rachel Bay Jones, 2017 Tony winner for Dear Evan Hansen (Friday, February 16) and Christine Ebersole, two-time Tony Award-winning star of War Paint, Grey Gardens and 42nd Street (March 24).

For the third consecutive year Maine State Music Theatre has swept the Broadway World Maine Audience Choice Awards, winning ten of the eleven categories for which it was eligible and taking home a record number of citations for its production of NEWSIES - ten awards, the most a single show has earned here. Other local theaters saw their artists and work recognized, among them the Good Theater, Mad Horse Theatre, Portland Payers, and Some Theatre. Competition was high and voting was often very close, and the runners up deserve special praise as well for being selected as finalists from over 9000 original nominations. Dear Readers, it's been quite a year and, hopefully, we've come through it unscathed. God knows we've needed some shows to help us escape and others to make us think. But through it all we've had several shows that have proven to shine as some of the best of the year. Out of all the shows I was fortunate enough to see this year, I've selected a few that stood out. Here are those stand outs, a few honorable mentions and a few special mentions about which I just couldn't help myself but to mention in their own special way.
