The renowned scholar Michael Henry Heim, professor of Slavic languages and literature at the University of California, has written a brilliant new translation of this play that established Chekhov. One of the first productions of the Moscow Art Theatre, the plot deals with a young Treplev, his unfulfilled literary ambitions and his love for Nina. Convinced that he has lost her and furious at her attention to the literary lion, Trigorin, the despairing young man kills a seagull and lays it at Nina's feet as a symbol of his ruined hopes. Nina leaves with Trigorin, only to return later after Trigorin has lost interest in her. In a moving half-coherent speech, she compares herself to the seagull destroyed by a man's momentary whim. In this translation, Professor Heim gives us a fluent, utterly Chekhovian text without making it so contemporary that the play loses its sense of period. This is The Seagull that soars.

A Contemporary Theatre Board President Colin Chapman announces that Artistic Director Kurt Beattie will retire at the end of ACT's 2015 50th Anniversary Season and will be succeeded by John Langs, a nationally recognized theatre artist who has served as ACT's Associate Artistic Director since 2013. Beattie, ACT's Artistic Director since 2003, will assume the role of Artistic Director Emeritus upon his retirement, stewarding long-term projects already in development as well as acting and directing in upcoming seasons.

The Old Globe today announced it will present Emmy Award-winning actor Richard Thomas ("The Waltons," Fifth of July, "The Americans") starring in A Distant Country Called Youth, an intimate look at the making of an artist, adapted by Steve Lawson from early letters Tennessee Williams sent to his family, friends, and professional associates. The Old Vic today announced its programme for Summer/Autumn 2014. The CQS Space, The Old Vic in the round, will be home to the whole season of productions, continuing after Other Desert Cities which opens this month. The plays will be performed in the round, a transformation of The Old Vic's auditorium first seen for the award-winning 2008 production of The Norman Conquests. The season of productions is supported for the fourth consecutive year by Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Kristin Scott Thomas is done with films. After starring in 65 features over the course of 30 years, the actress told the Guardian that she reached her breaking point at some point last September. Nor will she be appearing on television. Off-screen and onstage seems to be the way Thomas is headed. She played the title role in BERENICE in France in 2001 and loved it.
