The Starry Messenger follows an astronomy teacher whose carefully circumscribed world is upended by an unexpected encounter that changes everything. Two-time Oscar nominee Kenneth Lonergan, in his highly-anticipated return to The New Group following the 1996 premiere of This is Our Youth, teams up with his childhood friend, two-time Tony Award-winner Matthew Broderick and Oscar-nominee Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace).

Last night, Monday, May 10, The New Group opened their latest production of The Kid. This marks the final production in The New Group's current 2009-2010 season, which featured Kenneth Lonergan's The Starry Messenger and most recently, the hit revival of Sam Shepard's A Lie of the Mind, directed by Ethan Hawke. The Kid plays a limited Off-Broadway engagement through May 29 at The New Group @ Theatre Row. BroadwayWorld was on hand to capture the opening night after party arrivals.

According to the cast, a prompter will be on hand for the first week of performances of THE STARRY MESSENGER. As the director/writer Kenneth Lonergan continually made changes up to the first preview performance, actors felt they would be more comfortable on stage with a line prompter in the first row to assist them if they got stuck. Due to the last minute rewrites, the cast was unable to hold a full run through with an audience prior to the first preview. The New York Times reports that during the first preview on Monday, an audience member estimated that the show's star, Matthew Broderick, called out for about 10 lines throughout the night.
