The Sonoran Desert Chorale announces the first concert of their 24th season. The concert, titled To Everything There Is a Season, reflects the gifts of all the seasons of life.  Pete Seeger's immortal folk ballad, Turn, Turn, Turn is the perfect framework for this first concert. It brings audiences the works of contemporary composers like Ola Gjeilo, Jake Runestad, and Kim Andre Arneson whose music contemplates loss and life's storms as well as evoking moments of joy and peace.   Performances of To Everything There Is a Season will take place Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 7:30 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, 15 E. First Avenue, Mesa and Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 3:00 P.M. at La Casa De Cristo Lutheran Church, 6300 E. Bell Road, Scottsdale.  Season and single performance tickets are now on sale.

One of the nation's most innovative opera companies, Odyssey Opera, kicks off Trial by Fire: Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years' War, a season-long exploration of operatic works inspired by martyr, saint, and military leader Joan of Arc (1412-1431). 

Following Odyssey Opera's 2016-17 season dedicated to works inspired by the writings of Oscar Wilde, Artistic and General Director Gil Rose today announced the company's 2017-18 season: Trial by Fire: Joan of Arc and the Hundred Years War, featuring operatic masterpieces that tell the story of martyr, saint, and military leader Joan of Arc (1412-1431). Representing a wide range of styles, Odyssey Opera presents five operas that interpret the mysterious medieval world Joan inhabited. Opening the season is Tchaikovsky's The Maid of Orleans followed by L'assedio di Calais by Gaetano Donizetti, The Trial at Rouen by Norman Dello Joio, Jeanne d'Arc au Bucher by Arthur Honegger, and Giovanna d'Arco by Giuseppe Verdi.

The venerable Martha Graham Dance Company, founded 91 years ago in 1926, is thriving anew after getting past protracted legal battles following modern dance pioneer Graham's death and coping with the loss of historical material during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Much of the credit for the success of the current iteration of the troupe goes to Janet Eilber, a former Graham principal who has been at the helm as Artistic Director since 2005. She has instituted a policy of not only presenting Graham's classics but also commissioning fresh visions from today's finest choreographers.

The Martha Graham Dance Company's two-week season at The Joyce Theater, February 14-26, 2017, will feature three diverse programs organized under the season theme Sacred/Profane. Classics by Martha Graham and works by four contemporary choreographers, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Annie-B Parson, Pontus Lidberg, and Nacho Duato, will be presented, highlighting the mystical, spiritual, and humorous aspects of magical thinking.

American Repertory Ballet is pleased to announce Spring Into Dance, part of its 2016 spring series, at Union County Performing Arts Center's Hamilton Stage on Friday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. Led by Artistic Director Douglas Martin, ARB will once again present the finest ballet available to the residents of New Jersey and beyond. "Celebrate with Song and Dance!" will feature the Orchestra, Concert Band, and Wind Ensemble of Millersville University on Sunday, October 11 at 2:30 PM at the Winter Center presented by the MU Department of Music. The concert will feature selections from Beethoven's 5th Symphony, Borodin's The Polovetsian Dances, J. P. Sousa's The Washington Post, Norman Dello Joio's Satiric Dances, and a setting of the American folk song, "Shenandoah" by Frank Ticheli. Flute soloist and MU Faculty member Joel Behrens will also be featured performing Cecile Chaminade's "Concertino for Flute."  The Winter Center is located at 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville.

Janis Martin, American opera singer who sang leading roles first as a mezzo-soprano and later as a soprano in opera houses throughout Europe and the United States, has died at the age of 75. She was particularly known for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner and sang at the Bayreuth Festival from 1968 to 1997.
