Sandra Oh, Hoon Lee & More Set for Sundance Institute's New MENA Play Development

Sundance Institute today announced the acting company, dramaturgs and creative advisors participating in its pilot Theatre Lab in the MENA region, including Sandra Oh, Hoon Lee, Deanna Dunagan, Hala Omran and Raeda Taha. The Lab, held in Morocco next month, is part of the Institute's international cultural exchange programs for independent artists and will kick off a new, multi-year commitment to support artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). For the Lab, the Institute will provide promising, fresh voices from the U.S. and MENA region with a rigorous artistic retreat and new opportunities for cross-cultural discovery, artistic reflection and creative experimentation.

Margaret Thatcher Projects is excited to present Industrial Park, a series of new works by Ted Larsen in what will be his debut solo exhibition at the gallery, on view March 17 - April 23, with an opening reception on the 17th from 6 to 8 p.m. Larsen examines the history and moldable identity of discarded objects and materials through the creation of minimal sculptures.  

The Royal Conservatory of Music Sets Season Finale

On May 14, Marcus Roberts & The Modern Jazz Generation close out the "Katrina -10 Years On" concert series, dedicated to the spirit of the people who suffered from one of the worst hurricanes in history. In this concert Roberts, famous for his dazzling, virtuosic playing that taps the full range of the jazz piano tradition, unveils The Modern Jazz Generation, an ensemble that features his trio mates - Jason Marsalis on drums and Rodney Jordan on bass - and a number of next generation jazz greats. The musicians are joined by special guest Wycliffe Gordon (tuba), who returns to Koerner Hall after recently appearing with Rene Marie.

The New Group to Honor Ed Harris, Amy Madigan & Ellen Roth at Annual Gala

Off-Broadway's The New Group will honor Ed Harris & Amy Madigan and Ellen Roth at the company's Annual Gala on Monday, March 7 at Tribeca Rooftop (2 Desbrosses Street between Hudson & Greenwich). Hosted by Mario Cantone, the event will feature performances by Jerry Dixon and Nat and Alex Wolff, and an appearance by playwright Beth Henley, author of Crimes of the Heart and The Jacksonian. Music Director is Sinai Tabak. The evening, 6:00-10:00pm, includes cocktails, dinner, and silent and live auctions.

BWW Interview: Olga El

Olga El is a writer, director, and performance activist based in New York City. Her company, The Kandake Dance Theatre for Social Change, uses dance traditions from around the world to create socially relevant work and engage audiences and communities. This year is The Kandake's fifth anniversary, so I decided to ask Olga some questions about the company's unique foundations and where she thinks it may be headed in the future.

Randy Weston to Bring AFRICAN RHYTHMS to Zankel Hall, 3/19

On Saturday, March 19 at 9:00 p.m. in Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall presents Grammy Award-nominated pianist, composer, and NEA Jazz Master Randy Weston in a special one-night-only concert celebrating his 90th birthday and storied hallmark career. For this concert, Weston is joined by his African Rhythms band comprised of acclaimed musicians TK Blue (alto saxophone and flute), Cecil Bridgewater (trumpet), Alex Blake (bass), and Neil Clarke (African percussion).
