Producers Carl Levin, Michael Minarik and The Dodgers announced today that the 2009 New York Musical Theatre Festival's Outstanding Musical winner FAT CAMP will begin performances off Broadway on April 12, 2012 at the American Theatre of Actors. A certain generation (namely, my own) is going to really get a kick out of ROCK OF AGES. Those younger than me will still be amused by its wildly over the top antics, but those that are older may be a bit befuddled by the constant barrage of cultural references from the late 1980's, and probably have no familiarity at all with most of the music that's from that era. I think ROCK OF AGES is a gloriously hilarious and completely ridiculous homage to the big hair, hard rock anthem bands that ruled MTV and the radio at that time. This was cruising music when I was in my late teens and early twenties, so I instantly identified with the attitudes presented, and the music that accompanies each melodramatic moment.
ROCK OF AGES is a love story told through the hit songs of iconic rockers Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Whitesnake, and many more. Texas' Alley Theatre is currently presenting a revised version of production of The Toxic Avenger starring Tony nominee Constantine Maroulis, and featuring several new songs and revised book by the Tony Award-winning creative team of Memphis, Bon Jovi founding member and keyboardist David Bryan and Joe DiPietro. John Rando (Tony Winner for Urinetown) returns to the Alley to reinvent his hilarious 2009 Off-Broadway staging of The Toxic Avenger, and according to an interview with chron.com, he's hoping to squeeze the new version of the show into the 2012 Broadway season before the dealine for this year's Tony Awards.
