Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO), one of the nation's premier orchestras as well as a leader in presenting wide-ranging repertoire and adventurous commissions, announces programming for its milestone 50th Anniversary season in 2017-18, which spotlights its virtuosic artists and builds upon the Orchestra's five decades of intimate and transformative musical programs.
Manfred Honeck will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct Mahler's Symphony No. 1 and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, with Artist-in-Association Inon Barnatan as soloist in his final Philharmonic appearance in that role, Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at 7:30 p.m.;
Three composers -- Chen-Hui Jen, Wang Jie, and Hannah Lash -- will each receive orchestral commissions of $15,000 as part of the League of American Orchestras' 2016 Women Composers Readings and Commissions program, which is administered by the American Composers Orchestra and EarShot and supported by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.
The New York Philharmonic will present Beloved Friend - Tchaikovsky and His World: A Philharmonic Festival, January 24-February 11, 2017, featuring Russian-born Semyon Bychkov conducting works by Tchaikovsky as well as composers he was influenced by and whom he influenced, with piano soloists Yefim Bronfman and Kirill Gerstein.
Entering its eighth season in 2016-17, CONTACT!, the Philharmonic's new-music series, will return to National Sawdust in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for two chamber programs featuring New York-area composers. Calgary-based Honens today announced details of its 2018 Piano Competition. Pianists of all nationalities, aged 20 to 30 on August 30, 2018, with the exception of past Honens Laureates and professionally managed artists, may apply starting February 1, 2017. The application deadline is October 31, 2017. The Competition's Quarterfinals take place in Berlin and New York in March 2018. Semifinals and Finals take place in Calgary from August 30 to September 8, 2018.

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) today announced an ambitious international tour in 2017 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). This will be the first ever tour to Australia by the orchestra. A coup for Australia is that internationally acclaimed Jaap van Zweden, will conduct the orchestra with renowned violinist Ning Feng as soloist.
