BWW Reviews: Rep's Dazzling and Intense Production of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE is a fascinating and visually dazzling examination of painter Georges Seurat and his unique style, which art books call pointillism. Stephen Sondheim has crafted an entertaining score, but it was at the suggestion of book writer, James Lapine, that this artful and delightful production actually came together. While viewing his masterpiece, "A Sunday afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte", Lapine remarked that the only thing missing was the painter himself, and so we're blessed with this visually arresting musical recreation of that moment in time. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis has conjured up a superb rendering, filled with sharp performances and a pair of tableaus, one at the end of each act, that are breathtaking in their beauty.

Sara Gettelfinger On Bringing Morticia To Life On Tour With THE ADDAMS FAMILY

Sara Gettelfinger may have a resume that other actresses covet-now starring as the mysterious, intriguing, maybe even a little bit frightening Morticia Addams in the national tour of The Addams Family, she's been on Broadway in A Free Man of Color, Seussical the Musical, The Boys from Syracuse, Nine and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and she's toured in Fosse and 101 Dalmatians-but, truth be told, the highlight of her resume for me, at least, is a stint on the storied, now lamented and defunct, CBS soap opera Guiding Light.

Sunday in the Park with George opened Off-Broadway in 1983 with Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters in the lead roles. Reportedly, after seeing the show, Leonard Bernstein wrote to his friend Sondheim to commend him, calling the show 'brilliant, deeply conceived, canny, magisterial and by far the most personal statement I've heard from you thus far.' The show soon transferred to Broadway where it earned 10 Tony Award nominations, a New York Drama Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.'

Riedel also reports that Justin Timberlake who has been looking for a theatre project will be 'approached' for the role of the show's young legal protege, Jack Brigance, played out of town by Sebastian Arcelus.
