La Jolla Playhouse Extends SUSURRUS Through 10/23

Due to popular demand, La Jolla Playhouse today announced an extension of its production of Susurrus, the innovative, site-specific piece that launched the Playhouse's new Without Walls (WoW) program. Written by internationally-renowned theatre artist David Leddy, Susurrus will now run at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Thursdays -- Sundays through October 2 and on the following additional dates: Saturday, 10/8, Sunday, 10/9, Friday, 10/14, Sunday, 10/16, Friday, 10/21, Saturday, 10/22 and Sunday, 10/23.

Can a parent love a child just for him or herself alone? Ensemble Studio Theatre/LA will present the West Coast premiere of a darkly comic, yet poignant new play about childhood in America. Inspired by the unsolved murder of six-year old JonBenét Ramsey, House of Gold by Gregory Moss opens on October 22 at Atwater Village Theatre, with low-priced previews beginning October 15.

The Public Theater announced complete casting today for KING LEAR, directed by James Macdonald, beginning preview performances on Tuesday, October 18. Kristen Connolly (Cordelia), Bill Irwin (The Fool), and Frank Wood (Cornwall) will join the company that includes the previously announced Che Ayende (Duke of Burgundy/Knight/Servant), Craig Bockhorn (Doctor), Michael Crane (Oswald), Herb Foster (Old Man/Knight), Seth Gilliam (Edmund), Enid Graham (Goneril), Michael Izquierdo (King of France), Michael McKean (Gloucester), Arian Moayed (Edgar), Kelli O'Hara (Regan), John Douglas Thompson (Kent), Richard Topol (Albany), and Sam Waterston (Lear).

Transport Group, the Drama Desk and OBIE award-winning theatre company has announced that The Patsy, written by Barry Conners, performed by five-time OBIE Award winner David Greenspan, and directed by four-time Drama Desk Award nominee Jack Cummings III, will begin performances Friday, July 15, at 7:30pm at The Duke on 42nd Street, a New 42nd Street® project, 229 West 42 Street. The opening is scheduled for Sunday, July 24, at 7:30pm.

In an era when Waller had to enter some of the places he played by a side door, it would have been inhuman to resist completely the allure of white privilege. It's all on view in his song LOUNGIN' AT THE WALDORF, which contrasts the kind of freedom and looseness he could enjoy performing in Harlem with the stiffer, whiter milieu of the Waldorf Astoria. Nevertheless: "Ain't it swell doin' swell with the swells in the swellest hotel of them all? One of the strengths of the show is that it doesn't whitewash (if I may use that word here) this part of Waller's legacy.
