Poetic Theater Productions is proud to present POETIC LICENSE 2014: SHADES OF LOVE, their third annual festival of new poetic theater. Running from Monday, February 3 for a limited engagement through Sunday, February 16, the expanded two-week festival features performances, readings and cabaret evenings covering topics such as war, love, mental health, family, identity and politics from diverse social and cultural voices. In 1865, the Jewish holiday of Passover began the day after Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. This historical moment is the jumping off place for Matthew Lopez's suspenseful Civil War drama The Whipping Man, which receives its Central New York premiere at the Kitchen Theatre in downtown Ithaca this month. The Whipping Man runs from January 23rd through February 10th, with preview performances January 23-25, Opening Night on January 26, and the closing performance on February 10.

The third season of Lincoln Center's White Light Festival continues in November with "The Spirit of the Body," a work by dancer/choreographer Malavika Sarukkai showcasing her exquisite interpretations of South India's classical dance, Bharatanatyam. Accompanied by four musicians from Madras, India, the performances are presented in the intimate setting of the Baryshnikov Arts Center.

Created as a way to help shows get on their feet before flying off to Scotland, EAST TO EDINBURGH simulates the same production constraints that all shows experience during the Festival, while giving them a clean, comfortable and nurturing space to fine-tune their productions. This whirlwind three-week festival, featuring 16 productions, reflects some of the most adventurous theater from NY and across the US.

Downtown Urban Theater Festival (DUTF) opened on Wednesday, March 14, at HERE Mainstage with an exciting night of theatre featuring DEATH BOOGIE, written by Darian Dauchan. This Hip Hop poetry musical featured the poetic artistry of Dauchan and followed the fictional story of Victor Spartan, a blue collar worker who lives a comatose lifestyle by day and at night, hears the poetic sounds of revolution. It was directed by Jennifer McGrath with music accompaniment by The Mighty Third Rail and illustrations by David Ayllon.
