PRINCE OF THE PULPIT - Ford Community and Performing Arts Center

Brief Synopsis:

After forty years of leadership, Bishop Aaron Baxter prepares to pass the mantle at Solid Ground Church. Minister Jordan Sanders stands ready to lead, with his fiancée Noelle—the church’s praise leader—by his side. But when the prodigal son, Trent Baxter, returns to reclaim his family legacy and a seat on the pulpit, the congregation is thrown into turmoil. As ambition and faith collide, one question remains: who has truly been called by God—and who has entered the pulpit uninvited?

Project Description:
Prince of the Pulpit is a limited-run, faith-based theatrical stage production that will also be recorded during its live performances. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin approximately two months prior to the opening date.

Rate of Pay:
Principal and supporting actors are paid per performance day, with rates determined by role complexity and experience. Cameo roles receive a modest stipend. Extras and background/choir participants receive meal service and credit.

Trent Baxter (African American, mid-30s) is the charismatic yet spiritually conflicted prodigal son whose prophetic gift and worldly success mask deep childhood wounds. Magnetic and unpredictable, he returns determined to reclaim both his place in the church and his influence over those he once loved. Lead Role.

Brother Johnny (African American, early 20s) is the energetic, eager church adjutant who desperately wants to belong. Naïve but lovable, he is easily influenced until growing conviction guides him toward truth. Supporting Role.

Trish Edwards (African American, late 30s) is the outspoken, hilarious church homegirl who brings authenticity, personality, and relatable humor to every moment. Bold yet warm, she adds levity without ever becoming a caricature. Supporting Role.

Deacon Ivan (African American, late 50s) is the mature, grounded “church uncle” whose wisdom, steadiness, and balanced humor anchor the congregation. Respected and reliable, he provides clarity and stability during conflict. Supporting Role.

Raven (African American, mid-20s) is a soft-spoken, emotionally fragile young woman who lives in Trent’s shadow. Quietly intense and wounded, she longs for identity beyond her attachment to him. Supporting Role.

Don (African American, middle age) is a smooth-voiced cultural teacher whose brief scenes carry warmth and authority. His presence adds depth to the church-world dynamic. Cameo — One Scene.

Prophet (African American, 50s) is a foreboding, philosophical figure whose words strike with spiritual precision. His appearance enhances the dramatic weight of key moments and includes additional voice-over work. Cameo — Includes Voice-Over Work.

Young Girl (African American, around 9) is expressive, joyful, and emotionally flexible, able to shift from innocence to intensity. Though young, she adds sincerity and heart to the story. Cameo.

Teenage Girl (African American, mid-teens) is shy, withdrawn, and quietly observant. Her gentle presence underscores themes of vulnerability, searching, and emotional development. Cameo.
