The CM PERFORMING ARTS CENTER is holding Main Stage auditions for HAIRSPRAY on Wednesday, April 22 & Thursday, April 23 at 7:30PM.
Please bring possible rehearsal and/or performance conflicts to the auditions. The CM Performing Arts Center is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion in the casting and encourages actors of diverse backgrounds and underrepresented groups to audition. Video submissions will be accepted if you are unable to make either audition date.
Please send a video submission of a vocal selection as well as a dance reel showcasing dance ability, along with a headshot and resume to
stillkevinburns@gmail.com with your name and HAIRSPRAY AUDITIONS in the subject line.
Please prepare a 16 – 32 bar cut of a musical theatre song either from the show or in a similar style. An accompanist will be provided. There will be a dance audition following the vocal auditions. Please wear clothes comfortable for dancing as well as sneakers.

PLOT:
The 1950s are out, and change is in the air! Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs.
It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has only one desire – to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob, Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network… all without denting her ‘do!

Tracy Turnblad
Female, White, plays teen-aged. Our story’s unsuspecting protagonist, she is large and in charge. Confident, talented, and incredibly determined. A romantic with a good heart and desire to cut up the dance floor. Seeking a fantastic actress with a strong theatre/pop belt and excellent dance skills.

Edna Turnblad
Male to play Female, White, 40-50. Tracy’s mother – sincere and honest. 60’s Baltimore housewife, larger-than-life character actor with strong singing ability. Exceptional acting and comic timing a must. Simple dance/movement required.

Female, White, plays teen-aged. Tracy’s best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest girl, but she has good intentions. Bursting to get free of her mother’s dominating control, she falls for Seaweed with childlike curiosity. Seeking an actress with a great sense of comedic timing. Strong high belt, contemporary theatre/pop voice. Good movement/dance skills necessary.

Link Larkin
Male, White, plays teen-aged. The star heartthrob on Corny Collins’ show. He is extremely attractive and talented. Hoping to get his big break with a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. Strong pop singer and excellent dancer. High bari-tenor with strong falsetto.

Seaweed J. Stubbs
Male, Black, plays teen-aged. Tracy’s classmate and friend, who is discriminated against due to his skin color. Cool, sexy, street smart and good-hearted. He falls for Penny. Great actor with excellent, soulful pop voice. Must be a fantastic dancer.

Amber Von Tussle
Female, White, plays teen-aged. Link’s girlfriend and Tracy’s nemesis. She is pretty, popular, shallow, snobby, and racist. Seeking an excellent actress, vocalist and dancer. Strong high pop/musical theatre belt and superb dance skills required.

Velma Von Tussle
Female, White, 35-50. Amber’s mother and the director of Corny Collins’ show. She is a devious taskmaster and snobby racist. The former Miss Baltimore Crabs will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing. Requires an excellent strong belt/mix and devious beauty queen poise as simple dance/movement required.

Corny Collins
Male, White, age 30-35. The charismatic host of the Corny Collins’ Show. Good looking and smooth talking, he is a genuinely nice guy both on and off camera. Seeking a charming actor with smooth vocals and dance skills.

Motormouth Maybelle
Female, Black, should play 40-50. Seaweed and Little Inez’s mother. Queen of Baltimore soul, a radio DJ. Powerful and inspiring with an infectious, brassy personality. Excellent actress with ability to convey depth and light-heartedness. Soulful, gospel pop voice with high belt required. Minimal movement required.

Little Inez
Female, Black, plays young teen-aged. Spunky, tough and outgoing. Seaweed’s lovable little sister. Charming actor with a strong belt/mix. Must be able to dance well.Wilbur Turnblad
Male, White, 40-55. Tracy’s father. Sweet, goofy, childlike personality. He owns a joke shop and supports his daughter in spite of everything else. He also loves his wife, Edna, very much. Excellent comedic timing and simple dance skills required.

Prudy Pingleton
Female, White, 40-55. Exceptional comedic actress to play various zany roles including Penny’s uptight and small-minded mother. Also portrays jail matron, and the gym teacher.

Mr. Pinky/Harriman F. Spritzer
Male, White, 40-50
Seeking an inventive character actor to play multiple adult ensemble roles. Mr. Pinky, a flamboyant fashion boutique owner and a condescending high school principal. Simple dance movement required. Baritone.

All genders, all ethnicities, 16-35. Seeking triple threat performers to play various ensemble roles including the Dynamites, Tammy, Brad, Brenda, Fender, Sketch, IQ, Shelley, Louann, Gilbert, Stooie, Cindy, Lorraine, Duane, Thad, and many others.
