Milwaukee Repertory Theater Receives $500,000 Grant

In response to Milwaukee Repertory Theater's announcement that its historic building has experienced significant settling in recent years necessitating immediate repairs, The Herzfeld Foundation has awarded a one-time $500,000 grant toward construction costs. Combined with a $250,000 grant from the United Performing Arts Fund and a $75,000 grant from the Bert L and Patricia S Steigleder Charitable Trust, along with contributions from several individuals, The Rep has secured commitments for more than 50% of the $1.75 million in total repair costs.

The Marcus Center for the Performing Arts is hosting its 5th annual Flag Day Celebration on Friday, June 13, which is sponsored by the Marcus Center and Environmental Systems, Inc. Festivities are at the Marcus Center's Peck Pavilion from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The theme is Honoring the Dead by Serving the Living and this event is free and open to the public.

America loves cars, big or beautiful cars, and the late playwright James McLure uses a classical 1959 Thunderbird as a metaphor for his two one act plays In Tandem Theater blends into their season ending selection: 1959 Pink Thunderbird. These two one act plays directed by both Jane and Chris Flieller feature a feminine version and a masculine perspective on why the ionic pink T-bird, often immortalized in such songs as “Fun, Fun, Fun” by the Beach Boys, became romantic inspiration for hometown stories and legends, including those in Maynard, Texas, circa 1978.
Tickets to THE LION KING at Marcus Center On Sale 6/15

Disney Theatrical Productions and BMO Harris Bank Broadway at the Marcus Center and Broadway Across America-Milwaukee series announced today that tickets for the long-awaited return engagement of Disney's THE LION KING will go on sale to the public on Sunday, June 15 at 9:00 am in-person at the Marcus Center Box Office only. Ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster outlets will go on sale at 12:00 pm. Milwaukee's most eagerly awaited return will once again leap onto the Milwaukee Theatre stage on Wednesday, November 11 for a limited engagement of four weeks through Sunday, December 7. The opening night is Thursday, November 13 at 7:30 pm at the Milwaukee Theatre. The show's five-week premiere engagement in 2008 played a sold-out run at the Milwaukee Theatre.

To honor this incredible legacy of the feminine heroine Nancy Drew, Milwaukee's First Stage (FS), presents a world premiere in the Todd Wehr Theater on May 2: Nancy Drew and Her Biggest Case Ever. The new play co-written by FS Artistic Director Jeff Frank and FS Associate Artistic Director John Maclay becomes the 50th world premiere produced by First Stage in the last 26 years, and coalesces the men's combined notes from reading over 30 stories from the legendary mystery series. In the final script, the production will intermingle Nancy Drew's The Bungalow Mystery with The Quest of the Missing Map.
Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra Awarded NEA Grant

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa has announced that Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) is one of 886 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. MYSO is recommended for a $10,000 grant to support MYSO's Progressions program, a high-impact/high intensity string training and orchestral program for minority populations under-represented within MYSO and orchestral music in general.

This April, Milwaukee Rep staged an interesting performance written by David Bar Katz for the finale of their 60th Anniversary season. Superman, a fictional comic book hero still idolized by young and old, arrived in the production The History of Invulnerability, a play dependent on an overwhelming presence of stage technology and directed by Artistic Director Mark Clements. This historical narrative on how Superman was "born" reflects the mind of his co-creator Jerry Siegel one hour and thirty-six minutes before Siegel died.
