Seeking (all roles are available):

Shou Yu:

Chinese man. Character ages in the story from 28 – 51; actor should read early 30s/40s. Shou Yu is stubborn, moral, but also very engaging and charismatic. Self-educated.

De Hong:

Chinese woman. Character ages in the story from 17 – 41; actress should read youthful 30s. De Hong is a very persuasive, sympathetic character with a lot of energy and emotional depth. Educated.

Yu Fang:

Chinese woman. Character ages in the story from 40 – 58; actress should read 50s. Extremely well- mannered. Capable of quiet sarcasm and wit. Educated.

Er Jung:

Seeking actress 18+ to play a young Chinese teenage girl. Jung is gentle, afraid, but quietly determined.

Jian:

Seeking actor 18+ to play a young Chinese teenage boy. Jin Ming is defiant, angry, confused.

Heng:

Chinese man, 30s/40s. Likable character – friendly face.

Lo:

Chinese man, 30s. Peasant-class. Not educated. Strong physically. Judgmental. Needs actor with sense of comic timing.

Mrs Ting:

Chinese woman, late 30s. Attractive, educated, sexually and intellectually confident. Needs an authoritative actress.

Bolin:

Chinese man, looks 40s. Peasant-class. Man of few words, hard-worker, suspicious of politics and very hard to win over.

Huifen:

Chinese woman, looks 40s. Peasant-class. Hard-worker. Dominated by her husband, but has a sense of her own mind.

Dr Wan:

Chinese man, 50s-60s. Has a strong sense of experience and professional confidence. Warm, likable.

Commissar Li:

Chinese man, 30s-50s. Over-promoted, cowardly man in a position of authority.

Dai:

Seeking actress 18+ to play a teenage Chinese girl. Dai is an angry young woman, embittered and hardened by experience. Capable of real cruelty.

Ensemble:

Characters are Chinese men and women of various ages. Seeking actors (m/f) to play multiple parts throughout the play.
