We encourage performers of all races, ethnicities, identities, and abilities to audition for our season and are excited to cast these worlds expansively. When race/ethnicity of the character is integral to the work, we strive to cast accordingly. We are delighted to consider casting across the gender spectrum, but where necessary to uphold the story, performers must be comfortable depicting a character of the outlined gender.

Please prepare two contrasting pieces that show your range. If you wish to be considered for Sweeney Todd, one piece should be 16-20 bars of music. Please have sheet music in the correct key. The accompanist will not transpose. The total of both pieces should not exceed 3-minutes. Always bring your Equity Membership card to auditions.

SEEKING:

Sweeney Todd (M, 40s–50s) An impassioned, emotionally tormented man imprisoned on a false charge who embodies both a heartbroken husband and father and a bloodthirsty serial killer. Estuary or London dialect. Strong baritone/bass- vocal range: F2-Gb4.

Mrs. Lovett (F, 40s–50s) An entrepreneurial meat pie shop owner who will do whatever it takes to survive. Complex and surprising. She is resourceful, ambitious, charismatic, and has great comedic timing and depth. Cockney accent. Mezzo with belt- vocal range: G3-E5.

Anthony Hope (M, 20s) A youthful sailor who is idealistic, romantic, and ultimately reckless. His passions sometimes get the better of his reason. Standard British accent (RP). Tenor vocal range: Bb2-F4.

Johanna (F, early 20s) Rebellious, subversive, and romantic, longing to escape her confinement. Like her father, she has experienced trauma and possesses a buried capacity for violence. Youthful and innocent with a quirky side. British accent. Strong operettic soprano vocal range: Bb3-A5.

Judge Turpin (M, 50s–60s) A lecherous public official who portrays himself as a sanctimonious authoritarian. Cruel and cunning. Pompous, self-centered, and powerful. Embodies Puritanical hypocrisy. British accent. Bass/baritone- vocal range: E2-Gb4.

The Beadle (M, late 30s–50s) Sleazy, pompous, menacing henchman of the Judge. Odious and conniving. Possesses a dry, deadpan sense of humor and enjoys wielding his power. Obsequious and cruel. Can be subtly terrifying or outright threatening yet equally fastidious and fussy. Standard British accent (RP). Tenor with strong falsetto- vocal range: D3-D5.

Tobias Ragg (M, late teens to mid-20s) Young, waifish and vulnerable. Industrious and eager to please, with a good sense of humor. Uneducated but innately clever and observant. Thick Cockney accent. Tenor- vocal range: C4-F5.

Beggar Woman (F, 40s–50s) An unstable poor soul living on the streets of London. Mentally unstable and turns on a dime. Ghostlike. She haunts the story. Emotionally damaged and out of touch from the hard life she has lived. Cockney accent. Mezzo- vocal range: Ab3-F5.

Adolfo Pirelli (M, 30s–40s) A flamboyant Italian rival barber; a theatrical charlatan with many secrets. Long-winded, self-absorbed, and brazen. Unconventional, darkly comic. Italian and Irish accents. High operatic tenor- vocal range: B2-C5.
