BREAKDOWN
THE BRIEF WONDROUS LIFE OF OSCAR WAO
SEEKING:
OSCAR (UNDERSTUDY): Male, to play 18 - 20, Afro-Latino. Our hero. An empath with a childlike innocence. Nerdy and overweight. There's a wonder about him that is awkward to everyone else but him. In love with love and willing to risk all for it.
LOLA: Female, early 20s, Afro-Latina. OSCAR's older sister. A spitfire. Direct and blunt, she is a rocket of a woman. Suffers no fools. Has a deep heart and guards her vulnerability. Perhaps a little insecure.
BELI: Female, 30s (we see her from late teens to 40s), Afro-Latina. OSCAR and LOLA's mother. A tough love kind of woman, but not without reason. As a young woman -- full of hope and happiness, but her life's circumstances have made her hard and cold in the present. Remains very proud of what she has accomplished in the United States.
YUNIOR: Male, early 20s, Latiné of Caribbean descent. Charismatic and suave – he’s a flirt and he knows it. A wannabe playboy. A bs-er of sorts. Beyond his playboy demeanor is a young man searching for love and belonging. A Casanova with access to incredible vulnerability.
JENNI/YBON: Female, mid 20s – mid 30s, Latiné of Caribbean descent. JENNI appears confident and tough, but is deeply lonely and craving real connection. A goth. Means well (sometimes) but can be deceptive in her intentions. YBON is a self-described working girl. Lives a lonely life and also desperately craves real connection. There is something intoxicating about YBON to a person like OSCAR. Doubles as TRUJILLO WOMAN — menacing, cruel, powerful.
MANNY/DIONISIO/CAPITÁN: Male, 30s, Latiné of Caribbean descent. In all three roles -- these men are intimidating, commanding, and possess the capacity to cause physical harm. Strong imposing presence. MANNY is JENNI’s ex-boyfriend. A man who is not easily intimidated and who craves control. DIONISIO is a man of power and who does not take no for an answer, though we do see moments of tenderness and the genuine love he has for BELI. CAPITÁN possesses all-encompassing power - personally, professionally, and emotionally. Doubles as GOON.
LA INCA: Female, 50s – mid 60s, Afro-Latina. Raised BELI. Runs her own business. A spiritual woman. Hopeful and loving – despite all of the hardships she has faced. Fiercely protective of her children and grandchildren.
