BREAKDOWN
RAISIN THE MUSICAL
SEEKING:
[WALTER LEE YOUNGER] African-American, male, 30s, B2-A4, bari-tenor. Father to Travis, husband to Ruth, and son of Lena. Stubborn, energetic, and strong willed, he loves his family and strives for what he considers a better life. Is at odds with his mother over the use of his late father’s insurance money and wants to open a liquor store so that he doesn’t have to drive a limo anymore. Ultimately, he chooses to stand up in the face of prejudice to change the course of the family’s life.
[LENA YOUNGER] African-American, female, late 40s-50s, G3-C5, alto. The matriarch of the Younger family. With pride and hope, she cares for her family and wants to use the insurance money to purchase a new family home in the white neighborhood of Clybourne Park. Is sometimes at odds with her children but loves them fervently.
[RUTH YOUNGER] African-American, female, late 20s-30s, A3-E5, mezzo-soprano. Walter’s wife and Travis’s mom. Takes care to keep her house upright both literally and emotionally. She is a calming presence among the members of the family but has dreams of her own. Spars with her husband but loves him deeply.
[BENEATHA YOUNGER] African-American, female, early 20s, Bb3-D5, mezzo-soprano. Walter’s younger sister and Lena’s daughter. Studying to be a doctor and longs to leave the family home to have her own space and life. Wooed by Joseph Asagai.
[TRAVIS YOUNGER] African-American, male, 10-12, B3-Eb5, Eb2-F4. pop alto/unchanged voice is ideal. Walter and Ruth’s son. A precocious, smart youngster who aims to please but is not afraid to speak his mind.
[JOSEPH ASAGAI] African-American, male, 20s, Bb2-D4, baritone. A student from Africa studying in Chicago. An engaging suitor who entices Beneatha with talk of his homeland.
[KARL LINDNER] Caucasian, male, late 30s-50s. A representative from the Clybourne Park neighborhood association. Visits the Youngers to try to buy them out and preclude the family from moving.
[BOBO JONES/ENSEMBLE] African-American, male, 30s-50s, Eb3-F4, bari-tenor. A friend of Walter's. Intends to start a business with Walter and Willie Harris. (Will also be a member of the ensemble.)
[WILLIE HARRIS/ENSEMBLE] African-American, male, 30s-40s, B2-Eb4. A friend of Walter's. A slick sort, who seemingly intends to start a business with Walter and Bobo but steals their money instead. (Will also be a member of the ensemble.)
[MRS. JOHNSON/ENSEMBLE] African-American, female, 40s, B3-C#5. A neighborhood busybody who solos in the large church number. Lives with the Youngers. (Will also be a member of the ensemble.)
[ALTHEA/ENSEMBLE] African-American, female, 30s-40s, B3-Eb5. The proprietress of the neighborhood bar. Enjoys palling around with the customers. (Will also be a member of the ensemble.)
[PREACHER/ENSEMBLE] African-American, male, 30s-40s, tenor/gospel. Church preacher. Solos in the large church number. (Will also be a member of the ensemble.)
[ENSEMBLE] African-American, male and female performers, any age (18+). Denizens of the southside of Chicago. Will play commuters, neighbors, parishioners, folks at the bar, and members of an African fantasy. (Ability to make strong character choices is a plus.)
