PREPARATION

Please prepare either two contrasting monologues OR one monologue and a 32-bar cut of a musical theatre song to be considered for SHE LOVES ME. An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

PRAYER FOR THE FRENCH REPUBLIC

SEEKING:

MARCELLE BENHAMOU – 50s. Character is female. A psychiatrist and mother. Very French. Jewish. Has a solid sense of her identity and place in the world. She has recently achieved the status she’s worked her whole career for. A strong force in her family.

CHARLES BENHAMOU – 50s. Character is male. Marcelle’s husband and father to Daniel and Elodie. Jewish. Has lived in France since his family fled Algeria when he was 6. Even-keeled, kind, and urbane. Thoughtful and solid.

DANIEL BENHAMOU – 26. Character is male. Marcelle and Charles’ son. A newly religious Jew who takes pride in his religious identity. Passionate about ideas. Guitar skills a plus.

ELODIE BENHAMOU – 28. Character is female. Marcelle and Charles' daughter. Opinionated, outspoken, and unafraid of conflict. Smart and funny. Struggles with depression.

PATRICK SALOMON – 50s. Character is male. Marcelle's brother and uncle to Daniel and Elodie. Our narrator. A secular Jew with a dark sense of humor. Considers himself to be too intelligent to practice religion.

MOLLY – 20. Character is female. The Salomon’s distant American cousin who is in France to study abroad. Energetic and excited about being exposed to a new culture and world.

(Older) PIERRE SALOMON – 80s. Character is male. Marcelle and Patrick’s father. The last of many generations to run the family’s piano store. Survived in a concentration camp as a child. Pragmatic and caring.

(Younger) PIERRE SALOMON – 15. Character is male. Younger version of above character who we see in 1944–46. Aware of the state of the world around him. Quiet and unassuming.

ADOLPHE SALOMON – 70s. Character is male. Pierre’s grandfather; Lucien’s father and Marcelle and Patrick’s great grandfather who we see in 1944–1946. Perceptive and kind, and skilled at navigating and soothing family members’ distress.

IRMA SALOMON – 70s. Character is female. Pierre’s grandmother; Lucien’s mother and Marcelle and Patrick’s great grandmother who we see in 1944–1946. Unsentimental and very French. Jewish, but not religious.

LUCIEN SALOMON – 40s. Character is male. Irma and Adolphe’s son. Pierre’s father. An optimist whose spirit helped his son survive the concentration camps. We see him in 1944–46 as he struggles to reconnect with the world after the war.

GOD OF CARNAGE

VERONICA NOVAK – 40s. Character is female. A writer and wife who presents as kind, courteous, and socially conscious. However, darker instincts hide beneath the surface. Married to Michael.

ALAN RALEIGH – 40s. Character is male. A high-powered lawyer who is always working and anxious to be done with this interaction. Married to Annette.

ANNETTE RALEIGH – 40s. Character is female. Polished and put together, with some anxiety boiling underneath. Married to Alan.

JOB

JANE – mid to late 20s. Character is female. Young professional living in the Bay Area, knows how to dress to fit in, “self-aware” to a fault, wouldn’t be out of place at SoulCycle.

LOYD – 60s. Character is male. Lived in the East Bay his whole life, rocks a hippie-adjacent sort of look, has a high opinion of himself, wouldn’t be out of place at a Grateful Dead show.

AMALIA BALASH – Soprano. 20s. Character is female. The eager new employee at Maraczek's Parfumerie. Despite being a skilled saleswoman, she easily becomes intimidated and nervous. Attractive, bright, and a lover of literature.

GEORG NOWACK – Baritone. 20s. Character is male. An established employee of Maraczek's Parfumerie, he resembles a hopeless romantic. Shy, intelligent, and soft spoken.

ILONA RITTER – Mezzo. 20s–early 30s. Character is female. Employed at Maraczek's Parfumerie. She is learned in the ways of romance, but longing for something more from the game of love.

STEVEN KODALY – Tenor/high baritone. 20s–early 30s. Character is male. A well-respected and liked employee at Maraczek's Parfumerie. Though he is considered dapper and occasionally charming, he is more of a shallow womanizer.

MR. MARACZEK – Baritone. 50s/60s. Character is male. Owner of Maraczek's Parfumerie. With a commanding presence, his dedication to the trade is rivaled only by his faithfulness to his wife.

LADISLAV SIPOS – Baritone. Mid 40s/50s. Character is male. Not the brightest employee at Maraczek's Parfumerie. A confidant to Georg, he is an optimistic family man who is warm and fatherly.

ARPAD LASZLO – Tenor. Late teens. Character is male. Maraczek's delivery boy. A clear joy for life. He is committed to his job and is ambitious for more.

WAITER – Tenor. Any age. Any gender. Proud Headwaiter of a restaurant with a romantic atmosphere. Unsuccessfully rules the restaurant with an iron fist. Hugely comedic. Will double as other parts in the ensemble.

ENSEMBLE (4) – Any age. Any gender. To play store customers and restaurant patrons.
