Casting Note:
Our goal is to create a warm and welcoming casting process. The team strives to lead with respect, kindness, and generosity. In regard to the character descriptions – they outline the characters as described in the script and in consultation with the creative team. They do not aim to be all-encompassing representations of who might fill these roles. We aim for an expansive and deliberate casting process. We acknowledge that the characters in the script are traditionally presented as either male or female (using he/him or she/her pronouns). We warmly welcome submissions from individuals who identify as gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, or non-binary for the roles that resonate most with their identity.
SEEKING:
SEYMOUR (Male/Masc, late 20s to 30s, Any Ethnicity) A self-doubting, overworked florist's clerk who is the improbable hero of the story. He is a sincere, well-intentioned man who is taken for granted because of his clumsy ways and poor social skills. In love with Audrey and will do anything to protect her.
AUDREY (Female/Femme, Any Ethnicity, late 20s to 30s) She is all heart beneath her peroxide blonde hair and suggestive outfits. She has poor self-worth and education, but incredibly good looks and a sweet and vulnerable demeanor. She has beautiful dreams for the future despite the hopelessness of her abusive situation.
MR. MUSHNIK (Male/Masc, Any Ethnicity, 50s+) The weathered owner of the failing East Side flower shop and Seymour's boss. He is hungry for a profit, but not afraid to be gluttonous and manipulative.
ORIN (Male/Masc, 30s-40s, Any Ethnicity) An egotistical dentist with a passion for leather and sadistic tendencies. Audrey's abusive boyfriend, who is targeted by Seymour.
AUDREY 2 (VOICE OF THE PLANT) (All Gender Identities, 18+) A vocalist located offstage. The voice is that of a street-smart, funky, conniving villain. A funky Rhythm and Blues voice is best.
URCHINS - CRYSTAL, RONNETTE AND CHIFFON (Female/Femme, Black, 18+) the street urchins, acting as the occasional Greek Chorus. Young, energetic and street smart with a sharp sense of humor. The only ones who have a grip on reality. Strong singers and movers.
