PREPARATION

EXPECTED TO ATTEND:

Please prepare two contrasting monologues: one Shakespeare and a second contrasting classical or heightened‑language piece from any period. Dialects are not required for initial submissions but may be requested at callbacks. This season will feature acoustic music by actors.

Those wishing to share musical talents may optionally prepare 16 bars of music from any cultural tradition; musical theatre selections are also welcome. If you can self‑accompany on a portable instrument, please do so. Actors who choose to sing may also bring recorded accompaniment. A Bluetooth speaker will be available in the room. All material should fit within a 3‑minute period. The second monologue may be omitted if you are submitting a musical selection.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, by Oscar Wilde

SEEKING:

  • JOHN WORTHING, J.P. — a respectable young gentleman leading a double life; clever, earnest, and charming
  • ALGERNON MONCRIEFF — witty, playful, fond of schemes; enjoys banter and comedic mischief
  • REV. CANON CHASUBLE, D.D. — dignified yet comically earnest clergyman
  • MERRIMAN (butler to Mr. Worthing) and LANE (servant to Mr. Moncrieff) — will be played by one actor. Merriman is proper, efficient, and slightly formal; Lane is dry, witty, and subtly sardonic, providing comedic commentary on his employer’s schemes
  • LADY BRACKNELL — formidable aristocrat, sharp‑tongued, commanding, and delightfully strict
  • HON. GWENDOLEN FAIRFAX — sophisticated, confident, and witty; determined in her affections
  • CECILY CARDEW — young, imaginative, and romantic; clever and playful
  • MISS PRISM — Cecily Cardew’s governess; stern and proper with subtle eccentricity and comedic charm
