Breakdown

SEEKING:

ROSALIND
Female, Early-Mid 20s, Caucasian. Our young leading lady, beautiful, and tall. Rosalind is smart, warm-hearted, and a bit of a tomboy. She is a great reader and psychologist of other people. She is a saucy, sexy, heroine who saves herself (and others) all while getting her man. She’s got pluck, integrity, warmth, and charm. She teaches Orlando how to think about love; he teaches her how to feel about love. Actor must handle Shakespeare’s language well & have a sharp wit.

CELIA
Female, Early-Mid 20s, Caucasian. Our Ingenue. The pretty cousin and loyal best friend of Rosalind. Shorter than Rosalind, and lovely. Celia is a dreamy romantic, however she is more conventional, and traditional than Rosalind. She is a classic ingénue, clever and perky. Although Celia is not as smart as Rosalind, she has a heart of gold. Actor must handle Shakespeare’s language & wit well.

JACQUES
Male, 40s, Any Ethnicity. A leading man. He is very intense and pessimistic. An aristocratic philosopher and critic, the “Dark Fool” of the play—he always thinks the worst of every situation. Jacques has a sarcastic and mordant streak of humor. Brilliant thinker and speaker—even if everything he says is cynical, critical, pessimistic and dark. Amusing in his extremity but still a very effective communicator. Actor must handle Shakespeare’s language & wit well.

ORLANDO
Male, Mid-20s, Any Ethnicity. A romantic and sincere young leading man. Orlando is handsome, strong, smart, with great appeal and integrity. He has little pretension, but he’s very well-spoken. He has an enormous heart and passion—falls completely in love, to the point that Rosalind has to teach him to think, too. People think highly of Orlando, with good reason. Actor must handle Shakespeare’s language & wit well. Particularly interested in casting this role as African American.

OLIVER
Male, Late 20s- Early 30s, Any Ethnicity. Orlando’s older brother. He is obsessed with power & respect. He has ignored his brother’s upbringing and education, against the wishes of their late father. He is envious of Orlando’s popularity, and uses treachery and deceit to try to harm or kill his brother. When Oliver arrives in the Forest, he has been transformed into a humbler, nobler man and Oliver instantly falls in love with Celia. Actor must handle Shakespeare’s language & wit well. Particularly interested in casting this role as African American.

PHEBE
Female, Early-Mid 20s, Any Ethnicity. A comic character actress. Phebe is full of herself, humorously scorning her true love, Silvius, and falling in love with Rosalind (dressed as a man). Although she fashions herself the queen of the Forest, she’s NOT. She’s a young woman from a small country town with little competition. Attractive but not beautiful, plucky but not smart. Gets her comic comeuppance in the end. Actor must handle Shakespeare’s language & wit well.
