Breakdown:

"The sentimental person thinks things will last. The romantic person has a desperate confidence that they won't." F. Scott Fitzgerald. ALMOST, MAINE is a play for romantics.

The mythical town of ALMOST, MAINE is very far inland, and very far north, where the sky is big and the winters are long. Under a vast, moonless, northern sky, residents of this town are falling in and out of love at an alarming rate. Knees are getting bruised; hearts are getting broken...but the bruises heal and hearts mend—almost—in this mid-winter night's dream.

Seeking four strong, funny, truth -based actors who can create a variety of characters without relying on caricature. Need to be vulnerable and transformational.

Sense of humor is a must, but so is a sense of grounded-ness. This is a play is about ordinary people who are caught up in magical, extraordinary circumstances. They are honest, true, smart, and curious, but somewhat guarded. Not at all cynical. We are interested in actors of all shapes and sizes for all roles – people who look like they can move stuff and shovel snow.

Audition note: Almost, Maine is not "Down East." It is nowhere near the ocean. Do not think “lobstah” or “A-yuh.” No accent. Just talk.

Ultimately tracks for each of the 4 actors will be decided once the 4 are cast. As a place to start:

Seeking:

Man 1:

His track might include: Pete, Randy, Lendell, Danny. Late 20s-30s. 5 roles. A real “guy’s guy” but a bit of a sad-sack. Blue collar. A struggler. Ideally he looks like someone who has lost. And this sense of loss is manifested physically - perhaps he is bald or very thin or very short. Adept at physical comedy.

Man 2:

His track may include: East, Steve, Chad, Dave. Late 20s-30s. Plays 5 roles. Also a real guy’s guy but in a boyish way. Might be a big guy. Capable of being open, innocent and unforced. Blue collar. Also capable of a smoldering, quiet anger and desperation. Adept at physical comedy)

Woman 1:

Her track might include: Glory, Sandrine, Marci, Hope. Plays 4 roles. 20s-30s. Capable of being a fragile, desperate seeker (Glory) and a well traveled professional who returns to the town she grew up in to reconnect with a lost love (Hope).

Woman 2:

Her track might include: Ginette, Marvalyn, Gayle, Rhonda. Plays 4 roles. Late 20s-30s. Capable of being the hopeful, smitten girl-next-door (Ginette) and a rough, blue collar woman who at first can’t take in that a man loves her (Rhonda).
