DARIUS SMITH is an exciting and daring young composer currently residing in the Washington,
DC Metropolitan Area. Originally from Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Darius Smith did not formally entertain becoming a musical theatre composer until well into his undergraduate studies. At the suggestion of the Chairperson of the Department of Theatre Arts, Darius began to explore himself as a theatre composer, and has since developed a unique and dynamic voice as a writer. Influenced by jazz as well as popular music, Darius Smith's theatre compositions reflect a style that is youthful and fresh, yet complex and mature. Darius' first presentation in the DC area was the 2005 workshop of his song cycle, Amorous Ruminations. The following year, he formed an ensemble for musical theater students, Standing Room Only, which allows African-American college students to hone all their performance skills, while working together as a professional touring ensemble. In 2007 Standing Room Only presented the initial reading of his latest project, U.G.L.Y. (formerly Ugly Geena), a musical for which Darius wrote the book, lyrics and music. In January 2009, The Howard Players presented a workshop production of U.G.L.Y., which enjoyed a sold out run, and garnered much acclaim. Since 2005, Darius has composed several projects for DC area organizations focused on young people including R/J: The Fatal Tour (book by Raquis Petree and Suzanne Hoffman), Samson: The Musical (book by Chris McGriff), City at Peace DC and The Children's Theater Workshop (Denise Hart, Artistic Director). In addition to writing new music, Darius is a Professor and Coordinator of the Musical Theatre program at Howard University's Department of Theatre Arts. As a musical director and accompanist, Darius has worked around the DC Metropolitan area on numerous projects including The Stephen Schwartz Project (MetroStage), Go, Dog, Go! (Adventure Theater), I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change (Bethesda Theater), Disney's Beauty and the Beast (Encores! Stage and Studio). Darius earned a Master of Fine Arts from New York University's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program- and a Bachelor of Music in music history (minor in trumpet and piano performance) from Howard University. THE MIGHTY THIRD RAIL aside from being a clever riff on that special rail on the train tracks that will shock the ish out of you, and aside from being a metaphor in politics to avoid controversial issues, The Mighty Third Rail is also a brand spanking new band that mixes the elements of hip hop poetry, beatboxing, violin and bass. A 3 man squadron featuring the dashing Darian Dauchan on vocals, the indelible Ian Baggette on Bass, and the courteous Curtis Stewart on violin. When they're powers combine they produce a unique voltron of a sound the likes of which the world has never heard.

TERRANOVA COLLECTIVE is a vibrant playground for artists devoted to innovative new and original theatrical works. Its multi-layered development process, solo arts festivals, and productions serve to nurture and liberate New York City.
