The art of cabaret lost its Queen almost a year ago when Julie Wilson died on April 5 at age 90. There will likely be a number of tributes to Ms. Wilson throughout this year and a big one is happening on March 17 at 7 pm at the Metropolitan Room, where Joseph Macchia's Cabaret Cares/Help Is On the Way charity will pay tribute to the cabaret legend with a star-studded variety show that will also raise money for the organization that supports children living with HIV/AIDS.
The St. Patrick's Day show called Quiet, There's a Lady On The Stage (the title a variation of the Peter Allen song written about Ms. Wilson, who was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in Allen's 1989 Broadway musical Legs Diamond), will include singers Joan Crowe, Sue Matsuki, Julie Reyburn, Lauren Stanford and Christopher Zelno, with Tracy Stark as Musical Director on piano. The evening will feature signature Julie Wilson tunes and personal stories about the cabaret icon. Attendees will be able to participate in a special FREE raffle of a signed photo of the great Ms. Wilson.
Tickets are $20 with a two-beverage minimum. (Desserts & snack platters available) Go here to make your reservations or call 212-206-0440. Metropolitan Room is on 34 West 22 Street (Between 5th and 6th Ave.).
Help Is On The Way Today was founded by Joseph Macchia in 2005 to assist children and youth living with HIV and AIDS. Since then, the organization has raised over $100,000 and assisted more than 700 children in need. Fundraising is undertaken primarily through monthly performances by many of New York's finest nightclub and theater performers, and supports annual Backpack and School Supply Drive, scholarships for summer camp and an annual Holiday Toy and Gift Drive. The charity also helps families and organizations with special and immediate needs.
