JACKIE FIVE-0H!: A CELEBRATION OF Jackie Hoffman'S FIRST 50TH BIRTHDAY
Mondays, November 22, 29, December 6, 13, Friday December 24 at 7:30 PM; $30

Friday, December 31 at 7:00 PM; $40
Broadway's Jackie Hoffman, acclaimed for her hysterical scene-stealing performances in such shows as Hairspray, Xanadu and currently as ‘Grandma' in The Addams Family, will bring her all-new solo show Jackie Five-Oh!: A Celebration of Jackie Hoffman's First 50th Birthday to Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette Street) beginning Monday, November 22 for four consecutive Monday evenings.

In the all-new Jackie Five-Oh!, the blisteringly funny, filter-free Hoffman muses on her own decay, as well as about her experiences playing ‘Grandma' and a host of other topics such as Haiti and Hollywood. Hoffman will also world premiere several new musical numbers, including two that she wrote for ‘Grandma'....if she were to have a solo number in The Addams Family, which of course she doesn't .....not that she's ever complained about that.

Hoffman's previous outings at Joe's Pub (immortalized on the CD Jackie Hoffman: Live At Joe's Pub....NOT sold in the Lunt-Fontanne lobby) have garnered a cult following, as well as critical acclaim. Charles Isherwood of The New York Times wrote, "Jackie Hoffman's solo shows at Joe's Pub have become a beloved ritual. Ms. Hoffman radiates anything but love and charity as she reviews the year in outrage, both global and personal. And who can blame her! " Adam Feldman in Time Out wrote, "Jackie Hoffman is the funniest woman in America."

Jackie Five-Oh! is written by Hoffman and Michael Schiralli, and directed by Schiralli. Musical direction is by Bobby Peaco. Jackie Five-Oh! will be performed Monday, November 22; Monday, November 29; Monday, December 6; and Monday, December 13. Performance time is 7:30 pm. Tickets are $30. For tickets, visit www.joespub.com or call (212) 967-7555.

MANHATTAN NEW MUSIC PROJECT'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY: DARCY JAMES ARGUE, ICE, David Taylor

Tuesday, November 30 at 6:30 PM; $15 Standing Room; $40 Seating; $125 Benefactor

Manhattan New Music Project celebrates its 20th anniversary with a commission for Darcy James Argue and his 18-piece steampunk big band Secret Society -- along with performances by Claire Chase of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and MNMP founding member David Taylor. All proceeds benefit MNMP's performance and arts-in-education programs, which serve thousands of New York City public school students on an annual basis.

Featured Artists
Praising Darcy James Argue for his talents as a bandleader and composer, the New York Times recently called his work "...a wickedly intelligent dispatch from the fading border between orchestral jazz and post-rock and classical minimalism." Darcy will debut a world premiere commissioned in honor of MNMP's late founder and artistic director, Paul Nash. Darcy will also present pieces from his recent album, Infernal Machines (New Amsterdam Records) performed by his 18-piece big band, Secret Society. Infernal Machines was one of the most talked about jazz albums of 2009, featured on over 70 year-end "best" lists, including NPR, Wall Street Journal, and Village Voice.

ICE co-founder Claire Chase will perform Steve Reich's Vermont Counterpoint for solo flute and tape. Declared "dynamic" and "indefatigable" by Time Out New York, Claire is a passionate leader and innovator in 21st century music who has produced events both in the world's most important concert halls, and in warehouses, galleries and clubs. Claire co-founded the International Contemporary Ensemble in 2001, and the New Yorker has described them as "a powerhouse of new-music programming on a Chicago-New York axis...brilliant and unexpected."

David Taylor, described by the New York Times as "a bass trombonist with a marvelously dark cavernous sound and an attack that is as vividly dramatic as it is virtuosic," was a founding member of Manhattan New Music Project in 1990. He has appeared as a soloist throughout the world, and recorded with Yo Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Wynton Marsalis among many others. He will perform works by MNMP founder Paul Nash with surprise guests.

SHELLS COCKTAIL HOUR
Wednesday, December 1 at 7:00 PM; $15

"Heartbreakingly real, hilariously relatable" - Jane Borden, Time Out NY, Critic's Pick

"Real tragedy and painful humor... like a Beckett character" - Justin Boyd, The Brooklyn Rail

After her sold out summer engagement and a recent feature article in The New York Times, Shells, the famed JPMorgan Chase analyst-cum-cabaret sensation, returns to Joe's Pub! Hopping from hilarious songs to tales of the "rough" life, Shells weaves the story of a Manhattan gal getting over her first love, Scott. Armed with a glass of Shiraz and a penchant for drunk-dialing the one person she should not, Shells demonstrates that the fabulous Sex And The City life she thinks she is living and the life she actually leads are two very different things. Hilarious, pathetic and ultimately quite poignant, Shells leaves audiences cringing and saying, "I know her," or worse, "I am her!" Critically acclaimed as "truly original episodic theater", Shells is an honest and fresh look at the New York dating scene. Audience members are encouraged to email song requests to theshellsshow@gmail.com

BITCH

Thursday, December 2 at 9:30PM; $15

Bitch's musical journey has taken her from classical-violin training in the suburbs to experimental flicks in NYC. After leaving the outskirts of Detroit for the artier charms of Chicago-Bitch's unconventional and outspoken approach to performance caught the attention of a number of indie luminaries. She took fiddling lessons with Andrew Bird, serendipitously stumbled upon future co-conspirator, Animal at acting school, moved to New York to make their own 'theater' (Bitch and Animal) and recorded and toured with Ani DiFranco (who released Bitch and Animal's records on Righteous Babe). This association yielded an international following, introducing the world to Bitch's left-of-center and controversial brand of performance.

Bitch's out-of-the-ordinary message resonated with a generation of gender non-conformists, attracting the likes of New York theater legend John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), who tapped her star power for his Cannes Fest favorite, Shortbus. The runaway success of that film introduced Bitch to a wider audience. She went on to release her first solo album on the legendary Kill Rock Stars label, entitled Make This/Break This, a record that charted rockier terrain and earned her critical success. The tour that followed helped establish her reputation as an energetic, powerhouse performer, whose live shows mixEd Strong vocal prowess with a penchant for idiosyncratic musical instruments. (Bitch plays electric violin, ukulele and bass.)

In 2008, Bitch set out independently, launching her own record label, Short Story Records, along with a side project, Bitch and the Exciting Conclusion. She also found time to produce an album for critically acclaimed, Canadian songwriter, poet and folk hero, Ferron and released it on Short Story. Bitch added musical performances by Ani DiFranco, Samantha Parton from Be Good Tanyas, JD Samson (Le Tigre) and the Indigo Girls, which helped introduced Ferron to a younger generation of new fans.

Bitch's latest record, Blasted! (released spring 2010), is an outgrowth of that newfound creative spirit, a real labor of love and her strongest solo album to date. The melodies are catchy and haunting and the lyrics unflinchingly honest. Bitch plays electric violin like a rock guitar, and adds layers of unique instrumentation to create a sonic symphony. Blasted! is fully self-produced and will be released with money raised by Bitch's loyal fan base. With Blasted!, Bitch continues to push the envelope with her wild-spirited avant-garde "theatrical punk" sound and has produced her most listenable and enjoyable album to date.
