NOMI

Saturday, July 17 at 11:30 PM

Most recognized for being an integral part on the 2008 Hercules & Love Affair debut album and world tour as well as currently fronting the sexy new dance/pop band Jessica 6, singer/songwriter Nomi Ruiz takes a break from the dance floor and steps back to her roots with a special rare performance of her yet to be released sophomore solo album Borough Gypsy at Joe's Pub.

Born and raised in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York, side by side with the rebellious growth of Hip-Hop, Nomi began composing songs around Hip-Hop heavy street samples at the age of 12. Her deep dreamy vocals and personal lyrical content found refuge in these raw arrangements, creating a unique brand of soul music. After the self-release of her debut album 'Lost In Lust', which was compared to a union between Sade on vocals and Wu-Tang Clans The Rza on beats, she has grown to be a par of a movement of artists who are changing the landscape of contemporary music.

Nomi has recently appeared in the Women In Music issue of Elle Magazine and as the center fold of The Last Magazine draped in the latest Yves St Laurent collection. She has also been featured on Arte's Tracks, received full page features in Vice, Mass Appeal and NY Press, appeared twice on NPR's 'Spinning On Air', and toured the world extensively with Hercules & Love Affair, Cocorosie, Debbie Harry, her latest endeavor Jessica 6 and with Antony & The Johnsons as part of the multimedia masterpiece 'Turning' where her image was used on the limited edition vinyl record, tour shirt and commemorative program.

Nomi will be performing material off of 'Borough Gypsy' planned for release in early 2012 after the debut release of Jessica 6 set for an end of 2010 release. This special 'Borough Gypsy' performance at Joe's Pub will also feature a full band with special guests that include Morgan Wiley on piano & keys, Ben Tyree on guitar, Jim Orso on drums, Marlan Barry on Cello, David Azzoni on turntables, Andrew Frawley on percussion as well as a horn section, bass and background vocalists. $12

JULY 20-23

JESSE RUBEN WITH SPECIAL GUEST CHRIS AYER

Tuesday, July 20 at 7:00 PM

"The Next Generation of Singer-Songwriter " - Sirius/XM Radio

23-year-old, Philly-bred singer-songwriter Jesse Ruben freely confides that he's done a bit of "obsessing" over his just-released new album, The Ones That Matter. Not that such anxiety is evident on the highly accomplished disc, the follow-up to Ruben's self-released 2008 debut, Aiming for Honesty. Adding full-band accompaniment to his lush, soulful pop-rock, Ruben also stretches impressively as a writer on The Ones That Matter, achieving a near-novelistic sense of character and setting on finely hewn tracks like "A Lack of Armor" (a finalist in last year's John Lennon Songwriting Contest), "Bleecker and 6th" and "Unbreakable." His relentless attention to detail pays off handsomely. In support of the new CD, Ruben recently played standing room only shows in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Connecticut.

Upon graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2008, Ruben was already living out of a suitcase in his battle-tested Toyota. "If I had my choice, I'd be touring all the time," he volunteers. "I love the lifestyle - sleeping late and getting up and driving and playing and meeting a bunch of people and doing the same thing the next day. I love not having to worry about cleaning my room or doing dishes; I'm cool with living out of a suitcase; I'm just working toward the day when I can trade the Greyhound for a bus of my own."

"I'm staying out of New York for a while," Ruben sings in "A Lack of Armor," although that self-imposed exile has come to an end, as the singer-songwriter recently moved to the Empire State from his temporary base in Nashville. But for the time being, Ruben's true home is the road - where he'll no doubt continue to touch lives, have offbeat adventures and add new names to the ever-growing list of The Ones That Matter.

"A folk-pop sound with an upbeat tempo that could make the sun peek through the storm clouds" - Hybrid Magazine

"Has it all: tight arrangements, excellent musicality and imaginative lyrics." - Performing Songwriter Magazine

"Breezy singer-songwriter pop... come for the catchy melodies, stay for the minor IV chords." -Guitar Player Magazine

"Part street poet, part philosopher, Chris Ayer will leave you smiling whether you feel like smiling or not." -Buddy Hollywood Chris Ayer is a Brooklyn, NY-based singer-songwriter. He won the Lennon Award in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the Folk category and has been a recent finalist in both the Merlefest Chris Austin Songwriting Contest and the New York Songwriter's Circle Contest. Beyond strictly folk music, elements of pop, rock, soul and even country influence his sound.

Ayer grew up in McLean, Virginia, and got his start singing along to old cassette tapes of Elvis and Paul Simon on car rides. Over the last six years, he has been busy writing and recording new material, and touring throughout the US & UK. His independent releases include 3 EPs, 2 full-length albums, and a live CD, and he has played over 400 shows. His most recent album "Don't Go Back To Sleep" was released in fall 2009, and he will be touring both solo and with his band around the states throughout 2010. $14

DYLAN LEBLANC

Wednesday, July 21 at 7:30 PM

On Dylan LeBlanc's debut album, Pauper's Field, a lost world is brought to life - both in the carefully sculpted songs and rich well of country soul from which those songs emerge. Despite his age, Dylan's worn yearning voice already has the mark of aged experience. Neither the feel nor sound of the album, nor the haunted ghost summoning songs he has written, can be faked. Spin.com caught Dylan's set SXSW and called him "best southern troubadour" and said "this 19-year-old Louisiana boy sang with a world-weary tone that belied his young age. Blending a little of Jim James' reverb-drenched croon with Neil Young's raspy, high registers, recent Rough Trade signing LeBlanc sings with an easygoing assuredness" $12

DM STITH / INLETS / SILJE NES

Wednesday, July 21 at 9:30 PM

"Mentored by Sufjan Stevens, who signed Stith to his Asthmatic Kitty label, DM Stith has released a debut album which is arcane and esoteric from the off, a record that knows more than it's letting on. Stith's music, made with cellos and pianos but also the creaking of wooden doors, has the uncomfortable intimacy of Antony and The Johnsons (to whom he is often compared), but also the baroque strangeness of Bowie in his Brechtian Baal phase." - Independent

DM Stith's Heavy Ghost Appendices, which comes out May 25 on Asthmatic Kitty, revisits this secret world and adds to its cartography a series of hidden coves, unexplored forests, and new landscapes. Heavy Ghost was also mystifying and intertwined to David when he wrote it; the Appendices are a means to sort the thing out in his mind. They physically collect the digital trilogy of EPs released over the course of the summer and fall of 2009 into a beautifully packaged limited edition double-disc set.

"Inlets will please the hoards of music fans who have grown to love the floral and somewhat progressive folk championed by Grizzly Bear and Beach House. Less grandiose than the first and sunnier than the latter, Inlets' songs are instantly gratifying and more soothing...we predict that this record will be one of the soundtracks of this summer." -The Deli

"Think the weariness of a bedroom troubadour, a folkie with mild classical tendencies...It's really great stuff." - Stereogum

Inlets: A worrier, childhood choir member, and unfocused student of many instruments, Sebastian Krueger marries the darker ornaments of baroque pop with lo-fi intimacy. Far from his Wisconsin roots and perfunctory piano lessons, he works out of a small Brooklyn apartment as Inlets, incubating songs over the course of months and creating short, dusty suites. Inlets' debut full-length, Inter Arbiter, creates an elegant high drama. Framed by eclectic layers of clustered woodwinds, brass, and percussive guitars, the record captured a personal and raw enterprise.

Silje Nes: Starting making her own music around 2001, Silje began by recording on 4-track demo software through a tiny inbuilt microphone on her laptop. Though she'd previously studied classical piano, when she started recording, she did so with guitars and instruments she had no previous experience of playing. In this she was simply guided by the sounds she loved, and the excitement of discovering new instruments and sounds without learned conventions. Starting out by working purely instrumentally, she made use of whatever equipment she could get hold of - guitars and an old synth, a cello, a drum kit, a laptop, as well as loop pedals to build layers of her own playing. Little by little she also found ways of including her own voice in the mix, both as texture and song, and her music has organically evolved from there.

"Silje's voice is enchanting: breathy and beautifully measured, calmly sitting at the center of the musical webs she spins like a benevolent animating spirit. While Silje creates a sound-world entirely her own, she shares an autodidactic adventurousness with peers like Tujiko Noriko, Islaja, Lau Nau, or Foehn, as well as the homespun, sprawling beauty of The Pastels, Pram, or Crescent. Broad-ranging and full of character, Silje moves from languid dream-pop to stomping, upbeat tracks, to more introspective. abstract numbers. Sparkling melodies exude a music-box sweetness, while spindly electronics - barbed, bubbling, and tinkling - weave around an eclectic instrumentation that includes cello, drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, recorder, glockenspiel, xylophone, melodica, and trumpet, as well as percussion played on all manner of found objects..." $14

Thousands of police officers and firefighters exposed to toxic methamphetamine labs and soldiers exposed to burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering. It is our intent to help those who have put their lives on the line for their community and country and who have put the welfare of others before their own. They were the heroes we looked to whenever help was needed and who, in providing that help, lost their own health and quality of life. It is time to give back. We owe them. Please join us in this worthwhile endeavor by donating to the cause. $40 / $100 VIP ticket including preferred seating and meet & greet

Thursday, July 22 at 9:30 PM

DAVELL CRAWFORD

Friday, July 23 at 7:00 PM

Davell Crawford, an all-around musical sensation, is one of the true wonders of the contemporary Crescent City music scene. Bill Taylor from Blues Access proclaims, "Plain and simple, Davell Crawford is one of the most talented musicians alive!".

Also known as the "Prince of New Orleans," Davell is one of the city's most exiting live performers. Cited as one of the few musicians committed to keeping the piano sounds of New Orleans alive, he stands as the only and most documented young piano player that has kept the music true while adding a little freshness and vitality.

Performing since the age of seven, Davell has already enjoyed a widely acclaimed career as an entertainer. He emerged as a teenage piano terror and began to unfold his incredible talent before the world. He has toured many countries including Spain, Italy, France, Russia, Finland, Dominica, Brazil, Morocco, and Portugal among others. He has played extensively thorough out the states as well.

As a true roots musician, he shoots out from his deep gospel roots to incorporate the entire piano tradition from R & B to Blues, Soul and Funk. "Davell is the embodiment of every New Orleans music legend that has ever lived, from Jelly Roll Morton to Dr. John, from Mahalia and Satchmo, to James Booker and Professor Longhair, all rolled up into one musical ball of fire." $20

Lady Rizo: unescorted

Fridays, July 23 & August 20 at 9:30 PM

"The brazen blonde belts out classics and pop tunes atop a piano" -- Women's Wear Daily

"Caburlesque artist Lady Rizo has, thankfully, upped the ante... throwing in enough hyperfemininity to blow your heart and go down on your mind." - Sharyn Jackson, Village Voice

"Lady Rizo and The Assettes brought down the house."- Men's Vogue

"Rizo's mischievous grin and banter hold the audience captive." - NY Press

"adorably louche"-- Time Out

"Lady Rizo bring(s) out the Broadway in this chart-topper" --Rolling Stone

The incomparable "cabaret star" (NY Magazine) Lady Rizo is back for an unchaperoned evening of song and decadence. You may have seen her here at Joe's Pub with her "glam bottom baring dance troupe the Assettes " (Village Voice), celebrating the billboard top ten in the monthly series Our Hit Parade, or midtown at the gothic Night Hotel co-hosting the weekly transnational lounge Foreign Affairs.

But here is your chance to have her all to yourself. Her seamless mix of bawdy humor and elegance has been likened to Mae West but it's her vocal chops that have garnered recent attention: collaborating with both Yo-Yo Ma & Moby on albums this year, singing selections of the American Songbook in front of the internationally acclaimed 36 -piece orchestra The Knights, and at MOMA for a sold out cabaret for the Kirchner Exhibit.

Let her lashes beguile you as she interprets an irresistible mix of popular songs from all eras backed by some of the finest musicians in New York City. Even though she is venturing out solo, if you know Lady Rizo you won't be surprised if a couple special guests pop up. $15 in advance / $20 at the door
