The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson) and Joe’s Pub (Director, Shanta Thake; General Manager Kevin Abbott) are proud to announce the Joe’s Pub 10th Anniversary Weekend featuring 10 for the 10th, a two-day series of 10 free concerts at Joe’s Pub, and an anniversary Gala paying tribute to legendary musician, champion of emerging artists, and New Yorker Judy Collins.

On October 11th and 12th, Joe’s Pub’s 10th Anniversary Celebration Series 10 for the 10th will feature 10 free shows showcasing the depth and variety of performances that have made Joe’s Pub the premiere venue for live music in New York City.  A complete schedule of free 10 for the 10th concerts is below.

The 10th Anniversary Gala will take place on Friday, October 10th and will begin with a celebration dinner at Chinatown Brasserie followed by an all-star tribute to Judy Collins at The Public’s Anspacher Theater. Produced by Joe’s Pub and Katherine DePaul (President, Wildflower Records), Joe’s Pub 10th Anniversary Gala will be hosted by legendary WFUV DJ Pete Fornatale and will honor Judy Collins’ impressive career that has spanned nearly 50 years, her commitment to the music industry, and her history with The Public Theater and Joe’s Pub.

Collins, who appeared in Peer Gynt with Stacy Keach on the stage of the Delacorte Theater in Central Park in 1969, will highlight her history with Joseph Papp by bringing onstage many friends including Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, and Jimmy Webb along with a handful of Wildflower Records’ artists such as Amy Speace, Kenny White and Ali Eskandarian, to name just a few.

The gala also celebrates the new Wildflower Records release Born to the Breed - A Tribute to Judy Collins, Vol. I, which allows fans old and new to explore the hidden treasures of Collins’ own songwriting voice.  Featuring the original writing and poetry of Judy Collins recorded by luminary artists such as Chrissie Hynde, Joan Baez, Rufus Wainwright, Dolly Parton, Shawn Colvin, Leonard Cohen and more, the record is set for an October 14th release date. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of this CD will go to the Jazz Foundation of America.

Baby Loves Salsa

Saturday October 11 at 11:00 AM

Baby Loves Salsa is the third release from the independent Baby Loves Music label, created by Baby Loves Disco co-founder and Ropeadope Records owner Andy Blackman Hurwitz. This nationally acclaimed and award-winning series introduces the youngest kids to various genres of music – jazz, salsa, reggae and more—and features acclaimed artists and top-notch production values.

Joe's Pub History: The Baby Loves Music Series presented their first shows at Joe's Pub in 2006 with Baby Loves Jazz to celebrate the release of the CD Go Baby Go featuring Sharon Jones and more.  Baby Loves Salsa will be fronted by Latin-fusion sensation Jose Conde, who alongside his band Ola Fresca has brought the sizzling sounds of Afro-Cuban funk to the Joe's Pub stage four times since January 2005.

 Raúl Midón

Saturday, October 11 at 2:30 PM

Singer-composer-guitarist Raúl Midón, is a rising star discovered at Joe's Pub in 2003. The New Mexico-born, New York-based Midón plays a remarkable mélange of soul, R&B, pop, folk, jazz and Latin music, highlighting earnest, lyrical songwriting; full-bodied vocals steeped in soul; a singular, syncopated, flamenco- and jazz-infused acoustic guitar style; a unique vocal trumpet improvisation; and a hopeful disposition. While you can hear traces of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Jose Feliciano, and Richie Havens in his music, Midón is an extraordinary original whose passion is expressed in his indelible songs.

Joe's Pub History: Since 2002, Joe's Pub has had the honor of presenting virtuoso singer/songwriter-guitarist Raul Midón numerous times. Midón was discovered at Joe's Pub where he's made a home singing his mélange of Flamenco-Pop-Jazz both solo and alongside Pub family members, including a show with fellow 10 for the 10th performer Imani Uzuri in 2005.

Jill Sobule with special guest TBD

Saturday, October 11 at 6:00 PM

A remarkable songwriter, Jill Sobule sings smart, funny and poignant pop songs that transcend being witty and clever to strike deep emotional chords, set to irresistible, well-crafted melodies.  Her insightful songwriting and strong guitar work have made her a favorite among musicians like Lloyd Cole (with whom she played in The Negatives), Don Henley, Warren Zevon and others.  Sobule is best known for the 1995 single "I Kissed a Girl", and "Supermodel" from the soundtrack of the 1995 film Clueless.

Joe's Pub History: Beloved singer-songwriter Jill Sobule first played at Joe's Pub in January 2003.  Since then, she has graced the Pub stage many times and played the 2007 installment of Joe's Pub in the Park at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.

Imani Uzuri Presents Mosaic

with special guests

Saturday, October 11 at 9:30 PM

Imani Uzuri, eclectic and dynamic, is often compared to artists like Grace Jones and Nina Simone as one who defies category. Featured at numerous international venues, this bohemian spirit "... never fails to mesmerize audiences with her narcotic blend of...ethereal sounds." (Time Out New York). Uzuri has collaborated and recorded with the likes of Herbie Hancock, John Legend, 4-Hero, Talib Kweli, King Britt, and Sly and Robbie.

Joe's Pub History: Imani Uzuri first joined the Joe's Pub family in May 2000, presenting her uniquely ambient sound combining electronica, string-rock, jazz and soul.  This includes a performance alongside fellow 10 for the 10th artist Raul Midon in 2005 and a premier of her CD Her Holy Water: A Black Girl's Rock Opera in 2006.

The Budos Band

LATE NIGHT PERFORMANCE on Sunday, October 12 at 12:30 AM

The Budos Band returns to Joe's Pub, with its twenty-two legs, three horns, and hallucinogenic venom, the un-heralded emperors of Instrumental Staten Island Afro-Soul, continue to rule. The band commands their listeners to follow them on their second journey into the depths of their poisonous vision. While their debut album was itself heralded as a groundbreaking exploration of funk, afro-beat and soul music, few could predict that their second effort would not only match but surpass the realm of mind-expansion embodied on their first sessions.

Joe's Pub History: The Budos Band made their unforgettable debut on the Joe's Pub stage in August 2007 with the boisterous release of their CD Budos Band II.  The Budos Band also includes members of Antibalas who have graced the Joe's Pub stage many times and performed at the 2005 edition of globalFEST.

Allen Toussaint

Sunday, October 12 at 11:00 AM

Allen Toussaint, one of America's greatest musical treasures, returns for his now-famous New Orleans brunch series. Singer, pianist, songwriter, arranger and producer — the New Orleans native and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has been making hit records for over forty years. His massive influence on American music reaches deep into the idioms of rhythm and blues, pop, country, musical theater, blues and jazz. In 1996, he co-founded NYNO Records with Joshua Feigenbaum, devoted to presenting the indigenous music of New Orleans, and released his first solo album in 17 years, Connected. In New Orleans, Toussaint is revered for his distinguished record in public service, consistently devoting his talents to a variety of community and charity programs.

Joe's Pub History: Since beginning his relationship with Joe's Pub with a series of 5 concerts to benefit post-Katrina New Orleans between 2005 and 2006, Allen Toussaint has made our stage his home in New York City, and became and remained an integral, long-standing family member of the Pub. Included in his appearances on the Joe's Pub stage was his remarkable performance in the 2007 Joe's Pub in the Park series; and his intimate solo brunch-matinees have become a Joe's Pub staple.

Roy Nathanson and friends

Sunday, October 12 at 2:30 PM

Roy Nathanson has a varied career as a saxophonist, composer, band-leader, actor and teacher. He is leader and principal composer of the Jazz Passengers, a six piece group that he founded with Curtis Fowlkes in 1987. In 1994, the band released an original vocal album, Jazz Passengers In Love, which was produced by Hal Willner and Huge Dwyer for which Mr. Nathanson, composed a variety of songs. A number of guest vocalists were featured, including Jimmy Scott, Jeff Buckley and Deborah Harry. Since the summer of 1995 The Jazz Passengers have toured Europe and America with Ms. Harry and an occasional guest appearance by vocalist Elvis Costello. Nathanson will be joined by bassist Tim Kiah; trombonist Curtis Fowlkes; vibraphonist Bill Ware III, and other special guests.

Joe's Pub History:  Avant-Jazz great Roy Nathanson has been performing and experimenting on the Joe's Pub stage since 2004 both on his own and alongside his legendary seven-piece group The Jazz Passengers.  He made his first solo Pub splash when he released his acclaimed CD Sotto Voce in April 2006, and has since then continued on in his tradition of story/song projects, mixing eccentric genres like hard-bop and jazz-groove.

Reggie Watts with SPECIAL GUESTS

Sunday, October 12 at 6:00 PM

No man on Earth is like Reggie Watts. He is a tornado on a stage, hypnotizing his audiences with improvised music and absurd comedy. Like a dream, there is no ground to stand on. You cannot guess his next step, yet every moment is euphoric while you are in it. Reggie is classically trained pianist and jazz singer, and one of six Americans in possession of full vocal range (ten octaves of tone plus 300 distinct vocal styles).

Joe's Pub History: Reggie Watts' comedy-meets-R&B extravaganzas became a special spotlight at Joe's Pub back in 2005, when he played a double-bill with chanteuse Sonya Kitchell. Watt's vocal-acrobatics and musical-tangents have gone on to mystify Pub audiences as part of the recurrent Sxip's Hour of Charm series as well as a recent residency in spring of 2008.

The Stew Songbook

featuring Penny Arcade, John Cameron Mitchell and more!

Sunday, October 12 at 9:30 PM

After six months on Broadway with Passing Strange, Stew is tired of hearing himself sing (and Heidi is just tired of Stew, period).  But they're not tired of their wonderfully talented friends, whom they've invited tonight to sing their songs on this very special evening. Come witness a palette-cleansing collaboration featuring some of New York's grooviest luminaries from downtown to uptown and beyond.

Joe's Pub History: Stew carved his place into the Joe's Pub heart back in 2003 with his band The Negro Problem, and has mixed up musical genres with his poetic, hook-filled "Afro-Baroque" since then. Stew's relationship with the theatrical world continued to form and thrive at Joe's Pub, where he and band-mate Heidi Rodewald would go on to present their initial ideas and the first workshops of the future Public Theater production Passing Strange which went on to Broadway.

BE IN: A Night of Music & Love

with members of The Public Theater's Cast of HAIR

LATE NIGHT PERFORMANCE on Monday, October 13 12:30 AM

Members of the cast of The Public Theater's production of Hair are holding a Be-In!

Come celebrate with the Tribe as they sing songs of peace, love, and freedom in a night that will leave you inspired to "Let Love Rule". An evening of surprise guests and great music will surely be the perfect soundtrack for your very own "Summer of Love".

Joe's Pub History: The Public Theater's revival of Hair began in the summer of 2007 when it was presented as a concert-version interwoven with the musical events of Joe's Pub in the Park at the Delacorte Theater. Hair then became part of The Public Theater's 2008 Summer Season in the Park, and since then, the cast has made Joe's Pub the home of their reincarnation of the "Be-In" – a core part of the hippie life that Hair captures so perfectly. Two-times presented to a sold-out house, their Be-In has enchanted Joe's Pub audiences with its '60s songbook selections and the free-flowing vibes of beads, flowers, freedom, and happiness.
