In May 1977 three artists--Robin Hirsch, a writer and director; Charles McKenna, an actor; and Raphaela Pivetta, a visual artist--stumbled across a tiny storefront on Cornelia Street in the heart of Greenwich Village and thought it the perfect place to open a café. For two months they scraped and sanded, plumbed and plastered, and did the intricate dance one does with the authorities who live beyond the Village, and on the weekend of July 4, 1977, mirabile dictu, they opened the Cornelia Street Café.

GNU VOX: JULIE HARDY AND MADDIE DEUTCH
(Julie Hardy, voice; Bob Hart, bass; Joe Blaise, glockenspiel and voice; Brian Adler, drums; Maddie Deutch, voice, piano; Ryan Weiner, guitar; Ryland Kelly, bass)

Julie has been singing and writing songs for as long as she can remember. In the 7 years she has lived in NYC she has performed at almost every major jazz venue including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jazz Standard and Birdland and has received praise from the New York Times, Downbeat and JazzTimes. She is also a faculty member at the New School and City College. Recently, Julie has shifted gears and is focusing again on her songwriting and piano playing. Her music is influenced by such artists as The Beatles, Tom York, Feist, Joni Mitchell, St. Vincent and Robert Schumann. In addition to singing her own songs, she is a member of an indie folk chamber music group called The Overnight Crossing which is a songwriting collaboration with singer/guitarist Mark Dewings.

Maddie Deutch is a 19-year-old singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California. At the ripe age of 10 she began singing Broadway duets with heavyweights such as Dick Van Dyke, Lea Thompson, Tierney Sutton, the cast of Frasier and more. During her time at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts she became a nationally recognized jazz singer, and at 17 she shifted gears once more and became a serious songwriter. Heavily influenced by The Beatles, Fiona Apple, and David Bowie she writes modern pop music with an unconventional twist - and sings it with a voice that's well beyond it's years. David Devoe, host.
