The LA Opera Introduces the Three Countertenors of DIDO & AENEAS
From the iconic Three Tenors to the Three Mo' Tenors who made a name for themselves in classical circles throughout the 90s, we fast forward to October 2014 where LA Opera presents a historic first! Meet The Three Countertenors - John Holiday, Darryl Taylor and G. Thomas Allen - three gifted African-American countertenors making their LA Opera debuts in Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. To our knowledge, never before have three black countertenors been in one production together on an opera stage.
Operalia winner John Holiday, who made his Wolf Trap debut this summer in Giulio Cesare and is one of the most exciting young countertenors on the world opera stage today, sings the role of the Sorceress who along with her witches plot to destroy Dido and Aeneas' love. The trio of countertenors is rounded out by Darryl Taylor and G. Thomas Allen. An Alexander International Vocal Competition winner, Mr. Taylor received critical acclaim for his rich portrayal of the title role in Akhnaten at Long Beach Opera and has commissioned and performed works written expressly for the countertenor voice; while Mr. Allen also debuted at Wolf Trap this summer in Poulenc's rarely performed surrealist comedy The Breasts of Tiresias.
From Barrie Kosky, the brilliantly innovative director of last season's highly successful run of The Magic Flute, Dido and Aeneas opens October 25 in a special double bill with Bluebeard's Castle by Béla Bartók.

She succeeds former General and Artistic Director Lawrence Edelson, whose eight year tenure concluded at the end of the 2022 season.
