Rhymes With Opera concludes their 2013-14 season with the world premiere of Erik Spangler's Cantata For A Loop Trail, an outdoor performance that will take place in Baltimore and New York City. Audiences in Baltimore will meet at Gwynn Falls Leakin Park on June 14 and June 15. Audiences in New York will meet at Isham Park on June 21. Performances are presented free of charge. However, audiences are required to make advance reservations.

Composer Erik Spangler will guide small groups of hikers through a musical ritual set in a loop trail in each of the two venues, where they will encounter singers and instrumentalists both along the trail and heard from afar. The libretto for the work focuses on both the relationship between humans and the natural environment and the changes that the environment has undergone. The performers include RWO ensemble members Ruby Fulton, Elisabeth Halliday, George Lam, Bonnie Lander, Robert Maril, joined by Erik Spangler. The production is directed by Victoria Crutchfield.

In addition to the live performances, audiences will also encounter oral history and environmental sound recordings embedded along the trail. These recordings are created specifically for each venue, connecting local stories with sung texts from the Roman Code of Justinian, poetry by Wendell Berry, and Appalachian folk songs. Spangler is collaborating with students at the Good Shepherd School (New York, NY) to create oral history recordings with local residents.

Performances in Baltimore will take place on June 14 and June 15 at 1:30pm, 3pm, 4:30pm. There will be an additional performance at6pm on June 15 only. Performances in New York will take place on June 21 at 1:30pm, 3pm, 4:30pm and 6pm. Performances last approximately 40 minutes.

The New York performance is part of the city-wide festival Make Music New York, an annual summer solstice event that highlights live musical performances throughout the city.
