The Atlanta Opera has continued to be a leading regional opera company since it was founded in 1979. The company produces mainstage opera productions as well as multiple arts education programs for all ages. Each season the Atlanta Opera strives to expand the experience of its patrons with memorable and exciting performances while providing the best musical and theatrical quality while also supporting the community and educational programs. Thusly, the Opera annually employs the finest in international, national and regional singers, conductors, stage directors and designers.

In 2007, the Opera moved locations to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, which now serves almost 100,000 people annually. Since the move to this acoustically exceptional theatre, the company's audience has grown over 50%. Tickets to Atlanta Opera productions art very affordable, starting at just $25. The many education programs available through the Opera are often free, allowing the opportunity for anyone who wants to learn more about opera to do so.

The many education programs available to the community include complimentary passes to Final Dress Rehearsals to non-profit organizations, discount tickets for students, traveling opera productions to schools, opera workshops, family performances in the community, lectures and pre-show talks. The Company has a High School Opera Institute for those interested in a career in music as well as Arts Administration Internships for college students and recent graduates. For anyone looking to gain knowledge of opera, the Atlanta Opera has many Opera study guides availablefrom past and Current Productions.

One unique project that the Atlanta Opera presents is the 24-Hour Opera Project, in which composers, lyricists, stage directors and opera singers from all over came together to create opera in just 24 hours!

This past January was the third annual presentation of the 24-Hour Opera Project.
