Carlo Guelfi To Sing Scarpia In Tonight's Performance Of Met's TOSCA, 9/28

Carlo Guelfi will sing Scarpia in this evening's performance of Puccini's Tosca, replacing George Gagnidze, who is ill. Gagnidze is expected to return for the October 3 performance.

Guelfi is also singing Amonasro in Aida at the Met this season, beginning October 2. The Italian baritone made his Met debut as Scarpia in 2002 and has since returned to sing Iago in Otello, in 2004 and 2008, and the title role in Rigoletto, in 2002 and 2005-06. He also replaced Gagnidze in Act II of Scarpia at last Thursday evening's performance of Tosca (September 24). On that occasion, he sang from the side of the stage while Gagnidze acted the part. At tonight's performance, Guelfi will be on stage in costume.

Conducted by Met Music Director James Levine, Tosca also features Karita Mattila in the title role and Marcelo Álvarez as Cavaradossi. The new production is by Luc Bondy, with sets by Richard Peduzzi, costumes by Milena Canonero, and lighting by Max Keller.
