Carmen, the well-known opera, will play at Artscape's opera house from 9-19 March.

"Bizet's eternally popular and delectably melodramatic homage to Spanish music, Spanish passion and dangerous Spanish women returns, to Cape Town in a grandly traditional staging by Michael Williams and Michael Mitchell. The title role is shared by acclaimed local diva Violina Anguelov and the brilliant young Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili, fresh from triumphant appearances in the role at La Scala in Milan and the Met. Flamenco dancers from the La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre and atmospheric designs by Michael Mitchell, conjure up the dust and heat of 19th century Seville."

This production is directed by Michael Williams and conducted by Kamal Khan.  Tickets range from R100 to R350, with discounts for students and seniors.  For more information, visit the official website.

Presented by Cape Town Opera in association with Artscape; Supported by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, Artscape, National Arts Council, Provincial Government of the Western Cape.

The Artscape Theatre Centre, which belongs to the provincial administration, was opened on 19 May 1971 as the Nico Malan Theatre Centre. In line with the new South African political dispensation and the concurrent changes the complex was renamed to Artscape in March 2001. Historically the Cape Performing Arts Board (CAPAB) was instituted in the early sixties of the twentieth century. The aim was to promote the performing arts. The Arts Councils received sufficient government subsidies to fund various art forms as well as the operational requirements of the theatre facilities.
