See Chicago Dance Presents Day Of Dancer Health

As part of its yearlong commitment to addressing the health and longevity of Chicago's dance industry,See Chicago Dance (SCD), the city's nonprofit service organization, hosts a Day of Dancer Health on Monday, April 22 at the Menomonee Club Drucker Center, 1535 N. Dayton Street, Chicago. This special event is a highlight of the seventh annual Chicago Dance Month.

The impetus for the program is research published in the recent study "Mapping the Dance Landscape in Chicagoland," which revealed that nearly two thirds of Chicago dancers and choreographers live below the poverty line-earning less than $15,000 annually-and consistently experience work-related injuries. A study by the National Institutes of Health shows that the average dancer has experienced between one and seven injuries.

The Day of Dancer Health includes a Health Expo from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring representatives from The Actors Fund, Aligned Modern Health, ASSC - Advanced Spine & Sports Care, Athletico, Illinois Bone & Joint Institute, Impact Physical Therapy, Performance Podiatry Partners, and Universal Wellness Source, The Health Expo is free and open to the public, as are the following workshops:

11-11:45 a.m.: Living Well Empowered: Creating and Sustaining Vitality Using Data-Driven, Natural Medicine
Dr. Jessica Hehmeyer, DC, MS, LDN, CNS
Board certified chiropractic physician and clinical nutrition and functional medicine specialist

1-1:45 p.m.: Mental Health and Wellness: Resources and Tips for Dancers
Steven M. Haught, LCPC, CEAP
Director of social services, The Actors Fund, Central Region

2-2:45 p.m.: Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement
Emily Stein, GCFP
Feldenkrais and dance teacher

In addition, 50 dance artists will receive physical and mental health screenings, nutritional assessments, and local referrals completely free of charge. Day of Dancer Health, which has taken place in several other cities, is based on a program designed by Dance Resource Center in Los Angeles and the Dance/USA Task Force on Dancer Health. Dance/USA Executive Director Amy Fitterer stated, "The Dance/USA Task Force on Dancer Health has been providing post-hire screenings to dancers employed by companies for decades. We are very excited to offer this dancer-specific health screening to a wider array of dancers across the country through the Day of Dancer Health events."

Said SCD Executive Director Heather Hartley, "See Chicago Dance is thrilled to provide this vital service to the Chicago community. In addition to the immediate benefits this program will provide to the 50 dancers who will receive free medical care, the longer term goals are to create a network of Chicago-area medical professionals who are passionate about dancer wellness. We anticipate this launch event will lead to more resources and ongoing referrals for our city's vibrant performing arts community."

Day of Dancer Health sponsors include Dance for Life/Chicago Dancers United and the Menomonee Club for Boys and Girls Drucker Center. Special thanks to Dance/USA's Task Force on Dancer Health and its chair, Nancy Kadel MD, who is providing on-site leadership for the health screening portion of the day.
