Schimmel Center Presents Niño De Elche on March 14 as Part of New York Flamenco Festival

Schimmel Center presents acclaimed multi-disciplinary artist and atypical flamenco singer Niño de Elche on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the New York Flamenco Festival. Recipient of the "Album of the Year" award from the Spanish National Press Association, Niño de Elche's performances fuse flamenco singing and toque with performance art, poetry, improvisation, rock and contemporary music, and electronic elements. He is joined by Raúl Cantizano on flamenco and acoustic guitar, and percussion, and Susana Hernández (Ylia) on keyboards, synthesizer, and electronics.

The concert features songs from his newest album, Antología del cante flamenco heterodoxo (An Anthology of Heterodox Flamenco Singing), produced by Raül Fernández Refree (Lee Ranaldo-Sonic Youth, Rosalía) which will be released on February 23, 2018. The collection of 27 songs explores his artistic influences, among them film and visual artists Val del Omar and Valcárcel Medina, the writings of Eugenio Noel, the music of Manuel de Falla, Luigi Nono, and Dmitri Shostakovich, and contemporary musicians Crumb, Tim Buckley and Mikel Laboa, coupled with his own writings about Antonio Machado, Juli Vallmitjana, Lafargue, and more. Experimental dancer Israel Galván, and musicians Diego de Morón, "Pájaro," Juan de la Rubia, and Alejandro Rojas-Marcos are also featured on the album.

Niño de Elche's previous recordings include Voces del Extremo, Strates and Sí, a Miguel Hernández. He has collaborated with Spanish rock band Toundra, and has toured extensively to various music festivals including Womex, the Manchester Jazz Festival, Les Transmusicales, Womad, and Sónar.
