José Mateo Ballet Theatre opens the Company's remarkable 28th Season with a concert of stunning original ballets by New England 's celebrated dance-maker, José Mateo. Featuring a world premiere, Shadows Fleeting (Oct 4-27) offers a sampling of Mateo's most haunting and darkest works, at the glorious Sanctuary Theatre in Harvard Square, Cambridge. Shadows Fleeting is the first of a four-concert repertory series at The Sanctuary Theatre during the 28th Season.

"We are hardly a typical ballet company. Our ballets are all our own creations, performed exclusively for our local audiences by artists who are committed to extending an established tradition in new directions," says Artistic Director Jose Mateo. "We relish in the delight that the most seasoned ballet-goers take when they discover through our ballet performances unimagined dimensions in the art form and we most especially take pride in awakening in audiences who were unaware they could be so enthralled, a new appreciation for what may have previously seemed an uninviting art form.

Far from the decorative, fairy-tale narratives of traditional ballet, these Mateo works will rivet and transport you to the darker depths of the human psyche with two of his most haunting and complex ballets and a highly anticipated world premiere.

Shadows Fleeting features Mateo's spellbinding Covens (2006) set to James MacMillan's Symphony #3. This ballet thriller is a haunting tale about love and deception amidst the hysteria of a witch-hunt. Dark Profiles (2001) explores the range of emotional intensity in Beethoven's Fugue in B Flat. The ballet reveals the secrets of a tormented woman whose insistence on the truth of her own reality creates tension with the object of her lustful desire. The season's first premiere is sure to continue to stretch the breadth of the company's unique repertory .Press Night: Friday, Oct. 11, 8:00 pm

The Season offers Boston audiences a thrilling theater experience with cabaret-style seating, cocktails during the show and an extraordinarilyclose-up view of the dancers. Hailed by Boston Magazine as "Best of Boston Dance Performance 2011", Mateo's hallmark-style of presenting dance close-up makes dance personal and relevant to today's audiences.

Shadows Fleeting opens at the stunning Sanctuary Theatre at 400 Harvard Street , Harvard Square , Cambridge, October 4-27, 2013. Tickets are $40 for reserved cocktail table seating. For tickets, or more information, call (617) 354-7467 or www.BalletTheatre.org.
