The Wanderer
Wednesday, October 19, 2016 - 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, October 20, 2016 - 7:30 p.m.
Berlind Theatre

A master of visual composition, Jessica Lang has already fulfilled her early promise as one of the most important choreographers of her generation. A former Tharp dancer, Lang's works extend the boundaries of the dancing body through architectural décor that resembles abstractions of nature.

A prime example of this is The Wanderer, a full-evening work of dance-theater in which music, dance, décor, and narrative coalesce, each embracing one another-in this case, a dramatization of Schubert's 1824 song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin (The Fair Maid of the Mill), sung live by the baritone Steven LaBrie. Schubert's songs (with lyrics by Wilhelm Müller) provide a story in which a brook snakes through the narrative and LaBrie is onstage throughout, interacting with the dancers, his voice giving direction to Lang's fluid and playful choreography.

The Wanderer is Lang's first full-length ballet, but in the words of The Huffington Post: "it is more than a ballet; it's a culmination of plastic art, opera, and motion where no form overpowers the other."

Tickets for Jessica Lang Dance's performance of The Wanderer are $54.00 and are on sale now at the McCarter Theatre Center Ticket Office, by phone at 609-258-2787, or online at www.mccarter.org.
