Born in Shanghai in 1997, Miss Gao began painting with oils at the age of 6 after having created her own form of calligraphy at just 3 years old. For the next decade, she received recognition from renowned artists and calligraphers throughout China, leading to multiple gallery shows, museum acquisitions of her work, and major media appearances. In 2013, Gao was invited to Taiwan to help raise money for the Taiwan Autistic Foundation with the sales of her paintings. In late 2016, she donated all proceeds from her show at the prestigious Poly Auction House to charity, in which all 12 of her art works immediately sold.

Hailed as one of the top emerging contemporary Chinese artists today, Miss Gao is just 20 years old. She currently lives in New York City. Upon moving to the United States at age 17, she developed a love of Western classical music, opera, as well as studying the many sights and sounds of her new city. A devout Christian, Ms. Gao feels she is simply the instrument while the divine does the painting. "In this sense, creating art is a peaceful process for me. No stress, no ego. I'm very laid back," she remarks.

Jialu Mimi Gao's Solo Exhibition at the Montserrat Contemporary Art Gallery is a continuation of the painting style which has already brought her immense success in China.

"As I looked through her art portfolio, I was captivated by the confident brushstrokes, bold application of color, her limitless creativity and incredible potential," notes the critically acclaimed artist Cai Guo-Qiang, who has recently offered her an internship in his Manhattan studio-an opportunity almost exclusively reserved for ivy-league MFA candidates.

Montserrat Contemporary Art Gallery presents a diverse group of highly selected artists from around the world. Frequently reviewed in the art press, with its varied international roster of artists and an equal number of established and emerging artists from the United States, the gallery continues to develop talents who will make a difference in the decades to come.
