Utah Symphony Kicks Off 75th Anniversary Classical Season Tonight

Music Director Thierry Fischer and President & CEO Melia Tourangeau today announced the Utah Symphony's 2015-16 classical season programs and events celebrating the Orchestra's 75th anniversary.

Highlights of this milestone season include a two-week Beethoven Festival and symphony cycle; performances of Mahler's Symphonies Nos. 5 through 9 to conclude the Orchestra's two-year cycle of the composer's complete symphonies honoring former music director Maurice Abravanel; world premieres of an orchestral work by Nico Muhly and a percussion concerto by Andrew Norman, both to be recorded for future release; collaborations with Utah Opera, Ballet West, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Mormon Tabernacle Choir and The Madeleine Choir School as well as concerts featuring the Utah Symphony Chorus; visits by acclaimed soloists including pianists Kirill Gerstein and Joyce Yang, violinists Augustin Hadelich and Stefan Jackiw, percussionist Colin Currie and flutist Emmanuel Pahud, a longtime collaborator with Mr. Fischer; the Utah Symphony debuts of pianists Teo Gheorghiu and Louis Schwizgebel and conductor Cristian M?celaru; and the return of guest conductors Hans Graf, Jun Märkl, Robert Spano and Matthias Pintscher, who leads his own work.

Mr. Fischer and the Orchestra launch their seventh season together on September 11, 2015 with Beethoven's Coriolan Overture and Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5, opening the two-week Beethoven Symphony Festival. Mr. Fischer leads the Utah Symphony in 11 of the 17 Masterworks Series programs, which include more than 60 works with repertoire spanning 250 years. This season, he completes the Mahler symphony cycle including free performances of Symphony No. 8 featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and The Madeleine Choir School at the Salt Lake Tabernacle as part of the annual free O.C. Tanner "Gift of Music" series, and continues his multi-year Haydn symphony cycle with Symphonies Nos. 6 and 96. He also leads an all-Ravel program with a new staging of the composer's opera L'enfant et les sortilèges (The Child and the Enchantments) with Utah Opera and The Madeleine Choir School, dance concerts featuring Debussy's Jeux with new choreography co-commissioned by Utah Symphony and Ballet West, and a program that includes Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet performed with Utah Shakespeare Festival actors. In a special new-year performance with soprano Celena Shafer, Mr. Fischer conducts Viennese waltzes by Johann Strauss and family.

The Utah Symphony celebrates its 75th anniversary with a black-tie gala concert led by Mr. Fischer on October 1, 2015, featuring Lang Lang performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 and Grieg's Piano Concerto.

Also in honor of Utah Symphony's 75th anniversary, on April 29, 2016, the Orchestra performs at Carnegie Hall in Stern Auditorium, with a program that includes the New York premiere of Andrew Norman's Percussion Concerto featuring Colin Curie and Bartók's The Miraculous Mandarin.

The Utah Symphony presents its annual chamber music concerts at St. Mary's Church in Park City, UT with newly appointed Associate Conductor Rei Hotoda leading members of the Orchestra in two programs, one with works by Respighi, Grieg, Schreker and Korngold on January 14, and an all-Mozart concert including concertos with pianist Jason Hardink on May 5. Ms. Hotoda begins her role as Utah Symphony's associate conductor starting September 2015. In addition to leading the orchestra in various programs for community and chamber concerts, regional tours and the Deer Valley Music Festival concerts in Park City, UT, she will play an active role in the orchestra's education department, conducting family, education and outreach concerts.

2015-16 SEASON AT A GLANCE:

Thierry Fischer leads two-week Beethoven Symphony Festival
Mr. Fischer and the Utah Symphony celebrate Beethoven with a two-week, four-concert festival comprising the composer's first eight symphonies. The 2015-16 season launches on Friday, September 11, with Mr. Fischer conducting the Orchestra in the great Romantic composer's Coriolan Overture and Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5. A concert the following day, on Saturday, September 12, pairs Symphony No. 8 with Symphony No. 6, "Pastoral". The following weekend, the festival continues with the First Symphony and Symphony No. 3, "Eroica", on Friday, September 18, and Symphonies Nos. 2 and 7 on Saturday, September 19. To complete the full symphonic cycle, on December 4 and 5, Mr. Fischer and the Utah Symphony are joined by the Utah Symphony Chorus for performances of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9.

Conclusion of Mahler symphony cycle
The Orchestra continues its two-year performance cycle of Mahler's complete symphonic works this season with the composer's final five symphonies, all led by Mr. Fischer. The second half of Utah Symphony's Mahler cycle comprises Symphony No. 5 on November 6 and 7, Symphony No. 6 on November 20 and 21, Symphony No. 7 on January 8 and 9, Symphony No. 8, "Symphony of A Thousand", on February 19 and 20, and Symphony No. 9 closing the season on May 27 and 28, at Abravanel Hall. In a special presentation of the Eighth Symphony, Mr. Fischer will lead the Utah Symphony, Mormon Tabernacle Choir and singers from The Madeleine Choir School in two free performances of the grand choral work presented at the Salt Lake Tabernacle, as part of the annual O.C. Tanner "Gift of Music" series. The Mahler cycle honors former Utah Symphony Music Director Maurice Abravanel, who led the orchestra from 1947 to 1979 and conducted the first-ever complete recording by an American orchestra of the nine Mahler symphonies and the Adagio of the unfinished Tenth Symphony, on the Vanguard label in 1974. The Orchestra's performance of Mahler's First Symphony under the direction of Mr. Fischer was recorded live during the 2014-15 season and will be released on the Reference Records label in fall 2015.

The Utah Symphony premieres new works
Mr. Fischer and the Orchestra will give the world premieres of two works, both commissioned by the Utah Symphony: a percussion concerto by American composer Andrew Norman to be performed by Colin Currie on November 6 and 7 (to also be presented during the Utah Symphony's Carnegie concert in April) and a new orchestral work by American composer Nico Muhly on December 4 and 5. Mr. Muhly's work draws inspiration from the state's five national parks and red rock country of Southern Utah, following his visit of the area during the Orchestra's Mighty 5 Tour in August 2014. The work will feature a video installation by interactive media designer Joshua Higgason. This will be the fifth commission and world premiere presented under the direction of Mr. Fischer, who has placed commissioning new works by contemporary composers at the core of his artistic vision. The Utah Symphony performs EOS, a new work by Augusta Read Thomas, this February 20 and 21 during the current 2014-15 season, marking three world premiere commissions for the Utah Symphony in the 2015 calendar year, all of which will be recorded live for release at a later date. Mr. Fischer and the Utah Symphony have previously commissioned a cello concerto for Jean-Guihen Queyras from Michael Jarrell and Ellsworth 2 by Simon Holt.

Collaborations with Utah Opera, Mormon Tabernacle Choir, The Madeleine Choir School, Ballet West and Utah Shakespeare Festival
In honor of the 75th anniversary season, Utah Symphony collaborates with five of the state's great cultural organizations that showcase diverse talents and disciplines in performance. The Madeleine Choir School joins forces with the Orchestra and Utah Symphony Chorus in performances of Orff's Carmina Burana on October 23 and 24. Mr. Fischer and the Utah Symphony collaborate with Utah Opera and The Madeleine Choir School for an evening that pairs works for orchestra by Ravel with a new staging of his opera L'enfant et les sortilèges (The Child and the Enchantments) on November 13 and 14. The Utah Symphony, Mormon Tabernacle Choir and The Madeleine Choir School join together to present Mahler's Symphony No. 8 at the Salt Lake Tabernacle on February 19 and 20. The Utah Symphony performs works by Gottschalk, Ravel and Debussy with dancers from the world-renowned Ballet West, including choreography co-commissioned by Utah Symphony and Ballet West on Debussy's Jeux, on February 26 and 27. The concert hall transforms to theater on April 15 and 16 as actors from the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival perform the Bard's most tragic love story, Romeo and Juliet, set to Prokofiev's moving score performed by the Utah Symphony.

A season of celebrated pianists
This season the Utah Symphony brings five talented guest pianists to Abravanel Hall, including two from Mr. Fischer's home country, performing concertos by composers ranging from Mozart, Gershwin, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, Ravel to Saint-Saëns. Following Lang Lang's appearance at the 75th anniversary gala concert in October, Swiss-Chinese pianist Louis Schwizgebel makes his debut with Utah Symphony in two concerts February 26 and 27 performing Ravel's Piano Concerto in G led by Mr. Fischer. Performances in March include the Saint-Saëns "Egyptian" Piano Concerto by Swiss-Canadian pianist Teo Gheorghiu, also in his Utah Symphony debut, led by Matthias Pintscher (March 4 and 5), and Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto by Russian-born American pianist Kirill Gerstein, led by Robert Spano (March 25 and 26). On May 20 and 21, Korean-American pianist Joyce Yang joins the Orchestra for performances of Gershwin's Concerto in F.

Guest conductors in the spotlight
The Utah Symphony welcomes a distinguished roster of guest conductors during the 2015-16 season. Jun Märkl leads two separate programs, one with Orff's Carmina Burana and Takemitsu's Spirit Garden on October 23 and 24, and another featuring Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with Stefan Jackiw, Stravinsky's 1947 version of Petrushka and Falla's "Ritual Fire Dance" from El amor brujo on February 5 and 6. On March 4 and 5, Matthias Pintscher conducts his own work Idyll for Orchestra (2014) along with the Saint-Saëns "Egyptian" Piano Concerto featuring Teo Gheorghiu and Ravel's Alborada del gracioso. Robert Spano leads the Orchestra in a program including two Respighi works, Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome, on March 25 and 26, and Hans Graf conducts Holt's The Planets, with high-definition video from NASA projected during the performance, paired with Ligeti's Atmosphères and Scriabin's Poem of Ecstasy on April 8 and 9. Christian M?celaru makes his Utah Symphony debut leading Dvo?ák's Symphony No. 6 on May 20 and 21.

VIVACE, CADENZA, UTAH SOL AND FINISHING TOUCHES:

Utah Symphony | Utah Opera offers three social and networking organizations for classical music enthusiasts: Vivace, for millennials ages 21 to 35 who enjoy classical music performances and exciting after-parties with USUO musicians; Cadenza, for single music-lovers who have reached their golden years but are still young at heart; and Utah Sol, for Latino classical music and opera aficionados.

Vivace subscribers receive discounted tickets to select Utah Symphony | Utah Opera performances, special program notes and admission to after-parties with guest artists and musicians, catered by some of Salt Lake City's best restaurants. Vivace subscribers choose from five Utah Symphony performances on September 26, November 7, January 30, April 9 and May 21. They also attend Utah Opera's opening night performance of Aida on March 12, 2016.

Cadenza members receive similar benefits and dine together at local restaurants before select Utah Symphony | Utah Opera performances. Cadenza subscribers will attend six Utah Symphony performances on September 11, October 23, November 11, January 8, March 4 and May 27. They also attend Utah Opera's Friday night performance of Aida on March 18, 2016.

Utah Symphony Opera Latinos (Sol) is a group that connects Latino classical music aficionados in the Salt Lake City community through great live music, who receive invitations to attend special events and share the experience of attending Utah Symphony and Utah Opera performances together. Utah Sol events will take place following Utah Symphony performances on December 5 and February 6. They also attend Utah Opera's opening night performance of Tosca on October 10, 2015, and The Marriage of Figaro on May 7, 2016.

Finishing Touches dress rehearsals allow members to experience a behind-the-scenes look at the Utah Symphony with four open dress rehearsals on September 18, November 6, February 5 and May 20 beginning at 10 a.m. Complimentary light refreshments are served prior to the rehearsal in the lobby.
