The World Music Institute Presents COLOMBIA TO BROOKLYN: GREGORIO URIBE BIG BAND, 3/14

By:
The World Music Institute continues its World to Brooklyn series with Colombia to Brooklyn: Gregorio Uribe Big Band on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. at Roulette.

The show is preceded by an open cocktail hour (featuring a Colombian Refajo) beginning at 7:00 p.m. with Colombian dance lessons at 7:30 p.m., and is followed by an after-party DJ set until midnight.
Led by the Colombian-born charismatic singer and accordionist Gregorio Uribe, this 16-piece orchestra blends cumbia and other Colombian rhythms with powerful big band arrangements. Joining the group for the evening as a guest artist is singer and violinist Mireya Ramos.

The band has held a monthly residency at Zinc Bar for four years, and has performed at The Kennedy Center, Blue Note Jazz Club, Iridium Jazz Club and Celebrate Brooklyn Festival. In 2015 they perform at Dizzy's Coca-Cola at Jazz At Lincoln Center.

Gregorio Uribe Big Band's debut album was financed by followers in a successful Kickstarter campaign where the band raised over $23,000; it will be released in 2015. Gregorio has been featured by Latin music icon Carlos Vives and was named by the government of Colombia as one of the "100 Most Successful Colombians Abroad." He has been an artist-in-residense at Dartmouth College and a commissioned composer for Grammy-winning Arturo O'Farrill's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra.
